Looking For a Tuna Guide

My wife and I are keen to try tuna fishing. Our boat is too small so we're hoping to find a guide to take us out. I know that you can only go after tuna when just the right conditions line up, so a guide can't promise to make it happen. Since we have to book well in advance, I'm thinking that the best we can do is book for the most likely time of year and if the conditions are right we go tuna fishing, otherwise we go after salmon or lingcod etc.

So, can anyone recommend a guide out of the Victoria/Sooke area that might be able to find us some tuna?

Or, you know, if someone's looking for deck crew that doesn't get seasick when they go after tuna, well that'd be great!

Thanks,
Dennis

I think you'll need to look at tofino ucluelet waters for offshore guides.
A closer option would be Westport Washington if you don't mind visiting the U.S.

I can point u in the right direction in Tofino if that works?

My understanding is that the current stream you are looking for ranges from about twenty five miles to a max of ninety miles out when you are leaving from westport. I believe I have heard that it is reasonably reliable in the 40 to 50 mile range. What is the distance range when you get up near tofano? Or am I thinking about this wrong?

Hey Denis, I’m also looking to go out first time for some tuna this summer, maybe we can split the cost if that’s something that interests you…

You’re better off giving it a go off Ukee or Tofino. Coming down here (to Westport) and getting them on live bait will probably ruin you for all your other fishing 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Our fishery is very predictable from late July into October. 45-60 mile runs from the dock. Weather is the biggest concern, as it is up your way.

After the hockey games you are dead to us @wdlfbio

You planning to hit any derby's up this way this year?

We are looking at second weekend in September if you can add that too your calendar.

Ooooooooo, that sounds interesting too
I have a 25 kingfisher with new power to use for tuna, I will keep that in mind maybe we can buddy boat out there and get that tuna gear of yours some work, this time I will leave the wife on shore and not have to go back after just 2hours of fishing 25miles offshore 🤦‍♂️. September might be tough depending on how much I ditch work to play this summer but for tuna I’m in!

If you guys are looking for some crew to share expenses we'd be down with that. My wife and I are both experienced sailors so we know how to drive a boat, navigate and not get seasick. We gave up on that work nonsense a few years ago so our timing is flexible.

I think the kingfisher might be a bit too small for 4 people plus ice and gear, but definitely will keep that in mind if we end up going with a few boats I’m sure we can accommodate you guys somewhere.

I do agree with bc coast pilot, there’s a lot to do with going out for tuna, caring for the catch and knowing where to fish, having the intel… a guide especially for the first time would be priceless.
