log cabin im building

For 18 man...good job. Not only on the build but actually doing it. Very impressive Matt.

Indeed, forget the nay-sayers...they are all too fat and old to accomplish something like this! ha! Very cool. when's the open house?

agree with everyone, better then what the majority of youth are doing with their free time... I built forts/cabins up until I was 17-18, I don't see a problem with that...

I would be lying if I said I still didn't get the urge to build a fort/cabin while looking at shore, trolling in my favorite remote fishing areas!! and ill be 29 this week lol

if it wasn't for work, mortgage, bills, baby on the way, just a general lack of time I would be all over it...enjoy it while your young Matt, I look forward to getting my child involved in these sort of projects.

Cool project regardless of age .

I love the "better than sitting around Tim Hortons or McDonalds waiting for muffins to rise !! " comment............priceless:D.

Keep at it! When I was 17 a close friend of mine did the same thing, for a year he went up into the woods about 10 miles outside of town and started building a log cabin. When he was done it was great. It was a "Dick Proenneke" by the time he was done! He had hauled up a wood stove and made a couple of bunks. Post up more pics as the cabin develops.

Looks great Matt. Keep us posted on the progress.

I have a project like this coming up this summer. Gonna build a bunk house in my backyard to give visitors a place to sleep. I'll be going with the standard building practices and dimensional lumber, so it's not as cool as your project.

and also im ply wooding the floor roof and walls so there wont be any gaps in the walls

No stuffing the out side gaps with moss for insulation??

I'm guessing this is a learn as you go project (the best way to learn) and stuffing the gaps will obviously come after. Cool project. Always wanted to build a secret getaway out some where. Just be careful if it's on public land. Some official dudes get off on burning down "illegal" cabins.

Nice project and good on ya.
One thing to take note of is when you nail plywood on the logs then in time when the logs shrink and settle your going to be hearing lots of nails popping and creaking, then plywood creaking and bending etc. Make sure to leave room for shrinkage and settling.

Just like the cabin built on Okay Mountain. It was built up near the top, deep back into the woods. IT logged the whole area and rather than burning the cabin they left it. Now you can see it from the bottom of the mountain when you're on the mainline. Right in the middle of the clearcut.

A cordless drill and some construction screws instead of nails would be the way to go, no nails backing out or popping. This already looks better than the cabin built down by the Nanaimo river off the spruston main line. Keep it up man, post some pics of your progress.
