I'm all for individual accountability, so long as everyone plays by the same rule book...not happening from what I see on the water and frankly some of the boats and attitudes on the water are scary. So, bring it on! This is a good thing for the industry and tourism...finally consumers can buy trips with confidence. Not to mention, commercial vessels are not different than commercial airplanes. We need regulation in both to keep the safety standards advancing.

I don't take any pleasure in seeing someone get fined, but these rules have been in place now as mentioned for 5 years so this should be no surprise...only difference now is there will be enforcement because the rules were passed into law in November of 2009, so the police can now issue tickets.

So let's start working together to help guys get compliant. I know a few guys on this forum who are actually trying to organize courses and to help others get their boats to pass the inspection process - that's the way we should respond to this.

There is enough business for us all its human nature to "want it all" but reality is we cant. Yes its a business but if your not having fun doing it then why do it????

I can tell you the most rewarding thing for me is when some gets a fish for the first time or a client whos been with me a 1/2 dozen times and he finally gets a tyee to me that is the ultimate as im more happy for them!!!!!

Thats what I puts a smile on my face and why I keep doing it, the day I dont enjoy it is the day ill quit.

The three other courses prior to the SVOP were maditory as well as C# even 5 years ago. Whats the hype now with the addition of SVOP becoming manditory in Nov 09. (what a painful course)
Why on earth would anyone be doing any Rat Work now, this stuff was a requirment 5 years ago for us. The few guys who spent money on this 5 years back including myself did't rat on the others for not doing it, why **** in the cornflakes now?
Christ sakes, fishing is supposed to be fun, don't let the everchanging TC burocracies take that away by bantering and throwing cheese balls around. It's a small community and a small piece of Rock VI, word travels fast, think about it, we all fish in the same pond

Tailspin this is a business that just happens to be fun. But for a few of us it is business, it pays the mortgage, feeds the family etc etc. I wonder if you were a longtime plumber and someone off the street with no qualifications started to reduce your work...if you would feel so generous.

I am happy to see you find it so Fun, however you are missing my point entirely. I understand what your getting at, it's just nice to get along in the sandbox, rather than salting the wounds on each tach. You are right though, I am quite generous!
Not much of a plumber but i sure have laid alot of pipe in my time;).

I do still have fun after 24 years at it, however the end of each season is not the same as the beginning. Seven days a week and constant lack of sleep burns anyone out. Does it become some what old hat after awhile...sure...ask Wayner if the last 5 years in the NHL were the same as the first 5! As for getting along in the sandbox I think once the dust settles it will become easier to get along. As it stands right now , why would I associate/help/socialize with operators who undercut me and others by flying under cover. The example given earlier,"hasn't paid taxes on his boat, no courses, so I'm sure no proper TC safety gear, no C# why would I want him in the sandbox? What happens when that person has an accident. Does that make me look good?

As a Electrical Contractor here in Vancouver , Fully Licensed , YEARS of schooling ,We get our share of Buisness , There is a rediculous amount of tradesmen out there , that do not have the required Schooling , Licenses , etc.. Moonlighters ,hell , even full-timers, trying to make an extra buck or career . It's what it is , this will never go away , there is not enough manpower to enforce this , they slip through the system ,GET USE TO IT , Be Good at what ya do , Keep up to date on all your Buisness Requirements ,Bend Over when new regs kick in ,theres not alot we can do about it , The Strong will Survive , The Unqualified will eventually fall , sometimes HARD , LIABILITY !!

Hey Jackel... it's my understanding that your friend had lost interest in guiding over the last year anyway.
He is quite aware that further interests would require certification. He is safe, has a great boat, flies his own airplane,
but thats not the problem... you trashed a good friend just to make a point, you got caught with your hand in the cookie
jar and are not man enough to give a buddy an apology, so I guess it's just easier to trash him even further, which has gone beyond this site.
That says a lot for your character. Friends are there to listen to the good and bad, whining or not, he certainly listened
to his fair share of yours. What's it like to know that more people see your true colors ? I'll bet you're not sleeping very good right now.
What happened to keeping fishing fun and enjoyable ? Now it's all business.

Cheers All,

Contravention of Transport Canada Regulations 'may' result in an A.M.P. - Assessed Monetary Penalty (commonly called a 'fine'). The basic A.M.P. begins at $1250.00 and, as has been mentioned, increases with severity and frequency.

It will be interesting to observe what occurs this summer when there is every indication that TC will be not only monitoring the existing regulations but beginning actual enforcement. It is becomming apparent that those who have spent countless hours and even more money to compete on an even basis - complying with the regulations that are in effect - are unwilling to suffer any further in silence. With that dynamic I anticipate that many operations that are not 'complient' will be highlighted by those that are bringing the 'A' game.

It is happening already. A friend of mine who guides, who has no "C" number, no SVOP, No ROC, No First Aid, No MED and has not paid taxes on the purchase of his boat got a little something in the mail from Transport Canada. He phones me up and is whining about all the rules and regs, I say deal with it. This could be fun to watch if all pans out. Oh by the way it sounded like someone reported him, I think I will pull up a lawnchair in Renfrew and watch the games begin. By the way he fishes out of Sooke!

><))))">

Got a call and email from the whiner whining about how I could say these things and everyone knows who I am talking about. HHmm didn't see a name there and personally don't give a rats butt. When guys like Wolf,Profisher and the likes are spending the time and money to stay legit I say good on them and that is the route to go. for those who are not time to get on board. Can hardly wait for the next call[:p]

I think Jackel's point was more to reflect the attitude that some guys still have to justify not simply working to comply with the regulations. This isn't that tough, and even if you only want to charter part time it isn't too onerous. The whole point of this thread was to talk about the requirements, and what folks need to do to comply plus the benefits to both industry and tourism. If guys can't bring themselves to prepare, they know what to expect and should not be surprised if they are ticketed off the water. Hopefully most of us will simply find ways to work together to help one another become compliant as this is a good thing in the overall for our charter industry....or at least I haven't yet heard good logic to the contrary.

Jackel... although we all have an opinion... you say you've checked the guides qualifications/insurance...
well good on ya... nice save, I guess there is a first time for everything!! I like how you make yourself sound good !
Wasn't it your opinions that got you tossed out of the Renfrew Marina ?... you've had to relocate twice now...
soon you'll be out of options or maybe camping on the reserve. LOL

And how do you know how many letters went out? Is everyone else calling to whine as well?
The people who help stir **** up are also the ones most looking forward to pulling up lawn chairs to watch the
show and see how it all pans out. Seems to be lots of whining just reading this forum. Just my opinion !!
