I always have wanted to do this, does anyone know of a good web site to get some ideas, or maybe have some of there own? have some friends over for dinner and everyone gets to pick their own crab
Have you ever setup a "salt water tank" ? That will work. They will stay alive for quite sometime as long as there is oxygen in the water. If you don't want to set up a tank... just keep them in a cage or some kind of net hanging off your boat or dock allowing the water to free flow... they will last along time doing that. I put them im my livewell (with pump running) and have kept them alive for quite a few days.
What you don't want to do is put them in a bucket of saltwater... as they will use up the oxygen and die fairly quickly.
ya i get ya there, i want to keep them in my house, i think it will work as long as i have a filter, air pump for oxygen, and the fridge to keep them cool, the hard part is going to be getting the salt water right,

Remmember... Dungeness Crab will stop eating when they are removed from their habitat, so keeping them alive for even a day will start to degrade their quality. The starvation process will tend to make the meat spongy and will draw calcium from the shell, weakening the shell of the crab.
Well a salinty refractometer is only 100 buxs, keep the salinity around 32-37 ppm. If the water is colder 34-38f they will slow down and not eat themselves(or each other should say). I established biofilter is needed or the water will go toxic..... rather quickly in a tank that size. ...If there is any cascading in or from the filter you probably wont need air.
Ran a tank for quite a while and really its quite a pain in the arse and even easier with a 800 gal system
You can get saltwater from the ocean and fill up a bunch of buckets then we used a kiddie pool with a sump pump re circulating it from off the a top of the kiddie ladder splashing into the pool seemed to work not to cute LOL LOL but worked.
Good luck on whatever you use .Wheres the party???? are we invited?????LOL LOL
I keep them in a 30-gallon livewell. I don't keep them long, so I have never had the problem of them eating each other (If you keep them long enough that would be an issue) and they do fight. I have had issues with the stronger ones breaking off the claws and legs of the weaker.
You can buy the salt mix from a pet store, it has calcium among other additives we used to have a mini freezer with half or 3/4 inch tubing all coiled up in the freezer and had an in and out take plumbed into the storage compartment. Then we ran the hose into tank from a small pump. On the out side we had a filter unit and had a bigger sized air bubbler in the tank. As long as every thing was circulating everything was awesome. All said the whole unit was about $300. with the make up being new and used components. There are a few different meters to get the right salinity value from about $50 up. The salt mix was about $100 for a huge bucket. Have fun. Mason
