Just came through the closure . Waited about half an hour . The line heading out of town was ginormous. Hopefully getting back through Monday AM won’t be as bad.

To those wondering, we hit the road crossing on the east end early like 6:03, by 6:08 we were on the way and through.
 
I think if you hit it early like we did it’s not too bad, we were there around 6:45 and waited around a half hour looks like they let 100 vehicles through at a time. I can’t imagine what it’s costing for the cranes etc. what a massive cluster!

The BC Wildfire Service’s online ‘Wildfires Map’ shows the fire started at Arbutus Mountain, west of Port Alberni, and just east of Devils Den Lake.

ACRD forms committee to look at second road out of Port Alberni​


Highway 4 has been closed off and on due to a wildfire

The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD) will be forming a transportation committee to look at an alternate road in and out of the Alberni Valley.

The ACRD board of directors agreed during a meeting on Wednesday, July 26 to form a transportation advisory committee. Wendy Thomson, the ACRD’s general manager of administrative services, says the committee will consider issues and make recommendations to the board about transportation options and issues in the region, including the options for a secondary route out of the Alberni Valley.

The new committee will include representatives from local governments and First Nations, as well as the Port Alberni Port Authority, chambers of commerce from Port Alberni, Ucluelet and Tofino, Mosaic Forestry Management, Paper Excellence, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and the local business community. Thomson says the inaugural meeting will be held in October 2023.

Regional district chair John Jack said that the Highway 4 situation represents a “test” for the NDP government.

As there any rhyme or reason whether eastbound or westbound goes first when it opens up at 1130? Or is it a coinflip?

The schedule for weekdays when they are active was set at 11:30 am for West Bound (into Port) and 12:30 pm for eastbound.

Have heard there has been some variance with that though...

Yup, that was my experience last week.
 
Does anyone have the recent scoop on the road? Heading up Friday am, can I get through before 6am or is it just the 1130 program?

Posted in another thread without much luck, hopefully this is a more appropriate place for it:

Is there any indication of when the road will be open to all traffic again? The provincial website gives a plan up until Aug 19th (update yesterday). Assuming the plan is to be done by then?

Update they’ve now changed it to say “Aug 13 onwards”
 
Well beyond angry. Highway 4 closed again and no update when it's opening again. Heading home. We got there at 500 and workers told us the structure was sliding from rain. Sounds like they are doing an assessment so who knows how long that is going to be.

Be warned of coming from mainland today.

Our only options were running from Renfrew or logging road. Wasn't interested so hope it opens by tomorrow am.
 
It'll be interesting to see if the Province will fund an alternative route or just sweep it under the carpet if everything eventually settles down.
Just consider yourself fortunate that you don't live here as it's not going to be a lot of fun this fall/winter when the weather sets in.

Province does not anticipate road opening before midnight

Highway 4 east of Port Alberni is closed in both directions due to overnight rainfall.

The province’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure announced on the morning of Wednesday, Aug. 9 that rainfall overnight has required a portion of Highway 4 to be closed for safety. The highway has been closed off and on since June due to a wildfire along Cameron Bluffs.

“Current safe work procedures require that if 10mm of rain falls over a 12hr period that the road must be closed, rock mesh blankets lowered, and crews evacuated from site for a minimum 24-hour period as the risk of falling debris increases,” the ministry warned.

While DriveBC estimates the next update at 5 p.m., the ministry does not anticipate the road re-opening before midnight. Josie Osborne, MLA for Mid Island-Pacific Rim, explained on social media that travellers should be prepared for the highway to be closed until at least midnight.

“A consistent request we have heard from many people is for MoTI to provide timely updates to DriveBC (e.g., post at 5pm if they say the next update is at 5pm),” she explained. “MoTI has acknowledged this feedback and how important it is for people to make new or alternative travel plans.”

A detour route to Lake Cowichan via Bamfield Main is open. Check the ministry’s website for information about the detour route.
