Important Chinook Information - Feedback Required

This map is a bit better , but it is a bit confusing. Renfrew looks like it is not affected, but it is grouped with the WCVI (see text below the map). See attached link

Sorry message is a bit cryptic, but have to get on a call. I will try and remember to send you the Public Consultation info on Southern Resident Killer Whales a bit later, if you are interested. Hope Prawning was good.

Thanks, My confusion was/is "20-1 , etc seaward of a 1 NM boundary as is described .......closed to chinook until July 14" What is the rule for the area from 1 nm out toward the shore?

It seem like they have 20 and 21 as part of the offshore clusures, opening starts at pachena point one nautical mile out all the way up island to cape scott, pachena down toward victoria is no go, unless the amend the regs no go is what i am reading, not happy about it, but we still get a crack at at for 6-8 weeks, still better then a full on closure

Is there any discussion taking place about the fin fish closure around Pender Bluffs? Given the extent of the current closures, annual closures, RCA’s etc it appears this area has been written off? It should be noted this is one of the few local areas available for species other than Spring salmon.

Yeah soon you won’t even be able to drive your boat there.

Wow, the level of stupidity being displayed with some of the comments on this thread truly scares me. Yes we are all angry about the restrictions (my wife hears my venting everyday) on fishing . But looking for an easy out here, by blaming foreigner fisherman , immigrants, first nations, governments, pinheads, ENGOs etc., is just ignorant.

The reality is that we are all to blame, “we” as in "mankind" are slowly killing our oceans, I see salmon as the canary in the mine here. Don't get me wrong, I have strong opinions on pinhead culling, herring fishing, salmon farms (sorry James), habitat rehabilitation, and fishing in the rivers for spawning fish. But there are much bigger problems for our salmon, we are killing our oceans through, climate change (which we ignore for economic reasons), polluting our waters, and ocean acidification (changing PH levels of the ocean through CO2 emissions).

If we fix the local issues related to the health of wild salmon stocks that will certainly extend the availability of wild salmon for fishing and food, but for how long. My first questions is do you care if there are salmon for future generations and if you do at what economic cost?

So many on this forum see ENGOs as the enemy or as extremist. Generally speaking, these groups are made up of people committed to trying to save the planet from ourselves. My view of these groups are they have good intentions, but need be realistic and take a balanced approach if they want to get support of the general public. The reality is that ENGOs have the best chance of leading to the changes we need to make, if we want to save our oceans and our salmon. Global changes will take a long time, if ever to happen. So coming full circle, I see it as our responsibility to fight for the things that will keep our salmon around long enough to see those global changes that can lead to the long-term sustainability of wild salmon.

I got to say that you do not have a very clear understanding about what's happening here with this closure! If you're hoping this closure will mean more early Fraser Chinook back in the river, then you need to give your head a shake!

Well I knew some would get there backs up about climate change. But seriously Ironnoggin as a commercial Troll fisherman you have to be well aware of the effects of warm waters on salmon as well as droughts and floods on river systems.

And for those that dont believe in man induced climate change, what about PH changes in the ocean due to CO2 emissions?
The average surface ocean pH is now 30% more acidic than in pre-industrial times. There are many potential impacts on salmon related to this including -

Northwest Salmon Not Immune To Ocean Acidification

On a different note.

If Sportsfisherman want to change the public perception that we are a significant contributor to the decline in salmon stocks, there needs to be a much smarter and co-ordinated communication strategy. Given money is an issue the focus should be on leveraging social media to do a big PR push regarding all that sportsfisherman do to help salmon stocks recover. A well implemented social media strategy that consolidates and motivates sportsfisherman to share images and stories that show our efforts and commitment to salmon stock recovery. Can go a long ways to get more support for Sportfisherman interests.

Last summer I pinged Owen Bird at SFIBC on why they were so quiet when DFO first issued their consideration to close the west coast of VI to salmon fishing. He did not seem to share my same sense of urgency, stating that

"Media campaigns can be expensive and it is important to develop a strategy that will be most effective. We are fortunate to be working with some veteran media experts and have been advised that launching an effort in the height of the busy season and summer would not be productive. "

Well those ENGO groups many of you seem to despise were very active during this time.

A year ago I said boycott, don't buy any fishing licenses or go fishing , crabbing, prawning etc. Leave your boat parked. That's the only way we would have got any attention but instead people play along and fisheries knows this. Have all the meetings and send all the emails letters etc. but this will and has done zero.

How is it that every media outlet has only presented the points from the ENGO groups and their thinking. If the science, DFO’s own science backs up that fact that these restrictions will do very little if anything for actual chinook increases in the river. How has the story of political gain, smoke and mirrors and reallocation not been presented to the masses. Every single major news story I saw only painted the story of chinook stalks at near extinction. It’s no wonder the general public is in support of this decision, I mean who wouldn’t support it with the story the masses of been presented. No one talks about how the Georgia Strait has gone from a dead zone through much of the 90’s and is now seeing strong chinook numbers. Why has a major media outlet not told what’s actually happening out there

Media always reports doom and gloom, every fraser sockeye season like clock work they come out and post how the runs have crashed and how climate change is making salmon go extinct.

ENGO use that same doom and gloom, humans are destroying the planet and if you dont donate to us you are part of the problem.

SOG chinook right now are thriving and it's a shame were shut down because they will soon head north to campbell river where thoes same stocks will be harvested in late july. Silly but this is all political now. Science is out the window

The direct product of being bought off by the current liberal government.
They are getting the word out exactly as they are being fed it by their political masters.
Doesn't hurt that the message is somewhat sensationalist to help further their own agendas as well...

Nog

Thats the only way the media conglomerates get a government handout like the socialists that they rail against is to spew the party line or else. They have no shame.

I think that strategy would have been less effective than what we are doing. I suspect the ENGO"s would have been thrilled as it would have got us off the water more completely and faster than they had planned.

Further, in less you have a smaller boat in your garage or driveway it is not as simple as just parking the boat. I would still have thousands in expenses for moorage and storage fees, insurance, on going maintenance, depreciation and the deterioration of 80 gals of fuel. Medium and larger sport boats keep outside, especially on or near salt water need to be exercised or they deteriorate quickly.

When I stop buying a licensee it will be because our fishery is gone or the support services such as the small family run sport fishing focused marina and camp ground I keep my boat at packs it in because the public sector sport fishing industry is no longer viable for them. I don't tow my boat. Then I will decide what to do with the $15,000. a year I spent on the very low impact, environmentally friendly sport fishing industry that the Liberals are playing political games with.

There are lots of other places to fish in the world I can travel to where their governments.recognize the economic value of supporting a very low impact environmentally friendly industry such as sport fishing. I am sure they will be willing to take my $15,000. a year.

You get outside of the lower mainland and you can feel the anger and sense of alienation growing on this coast.

They are simply paving the way for the pipeline, by getting rid of the recreational boats they can increase the tanker travel. The other bonus is pressure off fish farms for DFO to deal with. Alberta is going to get their way and we can't stop it , Trudeau bought a pipeline and will get it done .

No doubt the climate is changing from what we are used to in our small life times, but to think we can really change or reverse anything is ridiculous. Science also tells a time line of the earths evolution in which it has gone through crazy things way out the control of any humans. Evolution of dinosaurs, mass extinctions, ice ages and so on. I’m not very versed in it all or overly smart and educated but, don’t you think we’re just along for the ride. Thinking we’re gonna reverse what’s happening with the earth is something else. Everyone sitting around on computers, living in modern day society in giant cities pointing fingers and judging others thinking they are making some massive change to the earth because they donate to ENGO or decide to eat a certain way, drive an electric car and so on is just ridiculous.

Has there been any pushback,or has our area been written off by SFAB? Between this the RCA’s, Annual Spring non retention area, new April to August closures there essentially is nothing left. I’ve seen a little push back on the closure in Area 20, but crickets for Area 18 and 19.
