How to Rig a 3rd Dowrigger

Is it possible to mount a 3rd Downrigger straight out the back off your transom, if you have a podded boat with single outboard..??

Wasnt sure if this was practicle or just to much hassel... Was thinking you would have to have an aluminum arm made up to act like an extended boom so that it clears the motor.. Then grabbing the clip with a gaff or swinging the boom to the side each time seems like maybe to much hassel... Any thoughts out there...

Cheers.

I wouldn't be without my 3rd rigger, except deep winter fishing along the bottom when 2 will do. I had my 2 piece mount made at Harjim in Victoria out of stainless and had it powder coated to match the hull. Remove the pins and the bracket and rigger can be removed so that the engine can be tilted. I swing the boom to the starboard side as my kicker is on the port side. The end of the boom swings right in tight to the corner of the transom and working it is a breeze...I seldom extend the boom all the way...maybe 6 inches from fully extended. Here is a pic.

I used to run and fish four downriggers. I have seem as many as six. The easiest way is to mount two midship and the other one (or two) on the corners of your stern - see picture. Just don't fish them all deep and watch the strong cross currents and turns, as it is not fun untangling them. When they do tangle and they eventually will, just make sure your engines are out of gear and only pull one up leaving the other down.

Old picture of old boat, but it show how the downriggers are mounted on my current boat!

Or you could just stack a 3rd rod like the rest of us, lol.

Brad, I've been running a 3rd rigger for a few years now. With the pod, outboard and your rigger fully extended your cannonball should clear the motor.Love having 3 riggers especially chum and sockeye fishing

I also run a 10 or 12 lb ball of it and 15 lbers on the side just want to get some clearance from the sides and I can tell you there is nothing better than a "WHHHHOOOMMMPPP" of that back rigger has a total different sound.

Good luck Wolf

I've always run my centre rigger the deepest. I run 15 pounders on all 3 but the middle rigger is always at least 5 feet deeper than the others and it is always the one set farthest away from the boat. I know the reverse works to, just the way I use mine.

Great set-up Profisher. But it looks like it would be tough to reach that rod when it's pounding away, no?

I'm tall and long arms. I don't use the tube holder anymore as I'm using trophy 9" Bucktail rods which have a very short butt section. (little longer than a fly rod) Not long enough to get down into the tube and prevent snapping the rod butt. I use an Orca mounted on the top of the transom on the starboard side, right beside the lid for the locker.

Ok Good, ill have a bracket welded up for a 3rd downrigger mount...Ill try it.... Now ive got to find a good used 60" downrigger...

Whole whack of DR's & rods...how do they do that??

No flashers, just spoons and some dipsy's on the rods without downriggers.

I actually counted six downriggers on that boat! :)

How do they do it? First thing is size of boat, you need a wide beam to run six downriggers. There are some larger charter boats on the west coast that run six. They have two downriggers on the beam. One is extended strightout at 90 degress, the other is set at 45 degrees = four on beam. Two downriggers are mounted on the stern. One at earch corner at port and starborad, they are pointed directly to stern = two on stern. Total of six downriggers and all can be used. As stated I have ran four. I could run six on my current boat, but there is no need. You have to watch your currents closely, and run shorter dropbacks and different depths on those beam downriggers, or they will tangle creating quite the MESS, even with four!

FTI... didn't see any flashers, really not that uncommon fishing plugs and spoons. Also, did NOT note or see a single "dipsy" being used, maybe I need to watch it again? :)

I thought I saw 1 dipsy...anyway on the great lakes they run so much gear it is almost ridiculous. They run dipsy's to get lines off the sides away from the rigger rods.

Hey Rollie,

What is the thickness of the flat stock that they used? 1/4"? Any idea how long the bracket is? 16"? gettin' ready for the season! :) Thanks - Matt.

guess i was blind only counted 4 there, two on the transom and one on either side with rods in holders set further back prob on the dispy's

bro had 4 on his 17' ocean sport but mainly ran 3 at times 60" arms on the outside pr
but i have since taken the setup down and put a single rigger on port and starboard and will just stack in the summer
able then to run 4 rods if it get's busy then drop down to 2 rods

and have 3 set up on my 22' cuddy mounted on transom either side and one central

Matt, just drop by the house and have a look. The upper part is in getting re-powder coated right now. It is stainless and was powder coated about 15 years ago and some had chipped off.
