Like I said, too much macho! Too close=I'm tough=shoot/throw. Then they get upset when someone suggests this is foolish and she's off the rails!

sure seem that way. Why not try the friendly approach? " Hey hows it going? I have 500 feet of line out that get tangled really easily any chance you could give me a little more space? thanks"

The fact is a lot of people don't know or understand what a safe distance is so lets all play nice out there , and maintain a friendly environment that keeps it fun.

Exactly!! I'd fish with you (or near you!) any day!! That is what it is all about.

Right on point beemer, sometimes a little courtesy goes a long way, and some times people are just plain old hard headed and ignorant. Takes all kinds to make the world go round

Since everyone is quoting lately my favorite is : lifes a box of chocolates you never know which one your gonna get- Forest Gump

x 3 guys. Enough negative crap. Man, this is supposed to be stress release from all the other "responsibilities" we all have. I don't want fishing to become a stressful enterprise. Peace, out......

I've followed this thread from the start but I'm still not clear on what is an acceptable distance to anchor when other boats are in the area - can anyone give a tangible distance or reference IE: 400ft, 600ft, 800ft, I'm assuming if you can read their K numbers/boat name it's way to close.
Thanks

I too have been following this thread, watched it come off the rails, and haven't seen what a suggested distance may be. I find it to be a simple decuction to put yourself out of distance of another on the pick. As a kid we always had a sailboat and cuised the coast and around the world. Every anchoarge that you went into this same BS applied, you would be the first to drop hook in the harbour, and then some inconsiderate A-hole would come in and drop hook if not across your line, right beside the damned boat. First thought that goes through your mind is WTF is this idiot thinking, does he seriously know so little about anchoring that he doesn't realize that he is going to pull our pick or at least swing into us when the wind or tide changes???? There is a whole frigging bay to anchor in and you have to drop right on top of us???? This happens all around the world believe me! (And apparently even in the middle of the ocean too;)).

I have always looked at it this way, come up along side the anchored vessel (SLOWLY!), keeping a safe distance and yet close enough that you can talk and clearly hear an answer. Ask the anchored boat how much line he has out, which way is the current flowing, and then anchor away from him that distance plus some to account for error in estimation of distance, and as a common courtesy when Hali fishing stay abreast or up current from the guy, do not anchor down current from him! This is all common sense, just ask yourself if you would be happy with him doing what you are doing if it was you that was there first. Seems easy right, well problem is that everyone has to think like this for it to work, and well as previously mentioned on this thread, not all seem to THINK when out there, obviously, or this wouldn't be a discussion.

Everyone also needs to remember that it is a BIG ocean, and the Halibut are not all in one spot, try out your own spot (maybe it will be better than the one that the other guy is sitting on:p), but that's just me. And hey if the spot that he is on is "THE ONE" that you have to fish, set up away from him, and if it is a good spot indeed then he will not be there very long before he has his limit and then you can move in when he moves out, again just common sense right???.

That's my 2Bits on this topic.

I try to stay at least a 1/4 mile from other boats when on the pick, one reason is safety obviously, the other is that there isn't much point fighting over a select few fish, especially when the other boat gets there first. Before you go out, just pick 3 or 4 spots that are fishable on the tides at that time, and if someones in your first spot, go to your second, and so on.

off sooke today had a moron in a mustard and white hurston throw the pick about 400ft right behind us in the sent trail.no other boats even close, courtesy and common sense, its a big ocean and heres a secret for you new guys fish swim. if you think your kinda close then your too close.

One thing that people should remember is if you or the other guy starts to drag anchor what is going to happen. If you are the guy down current are you going to be ready to pull anchor or cut away. If you are the guy dragging anchor are you going to be far enough away that you have time to pull your anchor and not foul his anchor and put you both in danger.

Haha that is the color combination and make of my boat (You can see it in my picture)! I swear it wasn't me though - I've been inside all day writing an essay:mad: Damn others guys with the same rig making me look bad lol.

Anyways hope you all had a good time out there!

It is a big ocean and there are always jerks, then again there are more of the "unknowing crowd". Some times it's the approach that sets the tone, I found taking the high road usually works the best....

http://www.sportfishingbc.com/forum...g-and-halibut-fishing!!!!&highlight=anchoring

I started this wa y back when and good info in it just PLEASE be carful out there I still saw some very dangerous stuff last weekend....

Guy came up way too close for my comfort they let all the rope out from the back of the boat with it in gear????? out goes the sotssman then watched the guy walk along side of the 20 ft double eagle in a 2 to 3 ft chop as there was no bow to stern line only to see him tie it off the bow cleat!!!!!!scary stuff.....

Some one asked allowable distance min 1000 ft its a big ocean why compete for a few fish go on your own and compete for them all... LOL
