How many herring can you take per day? Nice load Owen hard work paid off for you. I hope they come to deep cove and give me a chance at a few. I don't need that many though!

Nice job!! Typical Luck they hit the beaches during the week when I am at work. Do you think there will be anything left of it by the weekend??

im new to herring fishing! but do you just look for a ballon dept sounder then use your herring rig and jig em ??
Well at this time of year I look for massive amounts of sea life, white water, boils, and a really colourful sounder. We were in 10-20 feet of water with 8-10ft deep beds of herring under us. Once you have all these signs around ya you can't miss.

Actually sorry I'm missing it!! Good on ya Owen for taking out other folks to see the wonders of the nature during the spawn. Man those herring look prime for bait.!!

Well it took Newfie Boy and I about an hour longer then yesterday to fill the trash can. Wondering if the weather had anything to do with the change in fish activity. There were loads of herring on the sounder and the water was whiter then yesterday. Was it visability in the water or the weather.

DFO on the grounds are saying one of the best and biggest spawns .
Fishermen having trouble bring in nets as every hole in net has a fish in it ,
A buddy was thinking it would take him a week or more to get his quota got his in 1 1/2 days.
Good to see the , last 15 yrs of management is now paying dividends. both financially to those trying to make a living and for the stock bio masses.
We have been seeing a nice steadly growing spawn every year right in False Creek.
We need to raise some $$$$ to wrap the creosote pillings like Squamish and help it some more.
Safe fishing boys and girls.

You are certianly right that money needs to be raised to wrap/remove the pilings and great to see a nice spike in the population and hopefully that keeps going....but the spawn was actually higher 15 years ago than it is now. It is pretty clear to see this area had a high around 15 years ago and then a general decline since 1990, with spikes along the way. These are DFO stats though, so take them for what they are...

It is very shortsighted to be filling commercial nets with spawning herring until the population has truly rebounded. But obviously they deserve to reap the 'dividends' of the good management shown by the commercial industry and DFO over the last 15 years.

Can anyone remind me of the acts that DFO or the commercial sector have done to enhance the herring population?

To start they stay within allocation.

You obviously have a hate on for anyone making a living by harvesting seafood. Except guides I see

We are just leaving the grounds and this was one of the best fisheries I have seen in decades. Fish size is up we only used our largest gear. The spawn is still growing and there are still 10's of thousands of tons to spawn. DFO has such limited resources that they will struggle to asses how much fish was here. One school off chrome was estimated at 100,000 tons.

As for jigging go 1hr after flood. The fish back off the beech on the ebb.

Hey Fish4All,

I don't have a hate on for commercial fisherman. I do have a hate on for DFO's current management of the stock. I also saw the reports of the 100,000 ton estimate off Chome Island. That is GREAT news. What is not so great news is that there seems to be this almost fictitious estimate for the whole Georgia Strait of 115,000 tons. This number remained constant before and after the harvest....which I don't see how that is possible. I had a lengthy discussion with a DFO herring manager last summer and he pretty much said it was a political number. So, if there are 100k tons off Baynes Sound...that means that there is almost no other herring out there. So, even though the one area is doing great, the rest is suffering. And as we both know....it is hard to tell how accurate those numbers are with the limited resources that DFO has.

Perhaps you have some inside info to clear up a claim that I was just told: 12% of the harvest this season is going to human consumption and the rest is being ground up as fish meal. I take everything(from DFO, Commercial Fishers, Rec fishers, and enviro nuts) ALL with a grain of salt so I don't know how much truth it holds.

Like it or not, but we, as Canadians, are all in this together and all need to protect this resource. It should obviously be a concern for you as you do make your living off of it. Also as you are well aware, herring spawn in the billions(or trillions, etc) and lay billions of eggs and therefore the opportunity to enhance the population is HUGE. It would be so great to see DFO and the commercial industry putting as much effort into enhancement as grassroots organizations are; the return on investment could be huge for all...jst sayin.
