Halibut Seminar

profisher, I sent a PM but no reply, just wondering if there will be any tickets available in the Nanaimo area? Or am I best off to send you a cheque? Thanks for putting this on, should be very educational.

Hi Rollie

Its Paul from vancouver Im home now can you phone me tonight or text me I wrote down where to send the cheque before I left but my wife threw it out by mistake, 604 313 9368 thanks Rolie

With the tickets that I will be mailing out in the next few days we have reached 100 tickets sold! I've been told by my contact at the hotel to give the West Coast Tap House Pub a call as they will put on some kind of special for us the day of. Maybe we can fill the pub up afterwards.

As of today we have 115 tickets sold. Lots of people attending from out of town for this one. I'll be heading up Island as far as Campbell River tomorrow with posters for the up Island tackle outlets and marina's.

Island Outfitters have tickets. I just got back from Eagle Eye in Sooke and the ticket count is now 123 sold.

Pescador if you are from out of town I can mail you tickets. IC Point Grey listed as your home.

Send me an email at; sscl@shaw.ca. I can mail you tickets. I've already mailed out about 45 tickets to people coming from out of town. I went up Island today and picked up a projector and screen from DHA and then carried on as far as CR to get some posters up at the tackle outlets I knew about. Long day but a decent drive for the time of year. Don't often do that trip in the winter.

Earlier on in this thread someone had a personal problem with Gord who is helping us raise money for Charters Creek by agreeing to be the main speaker. I sent that individual a private message shortly after that post surfaced. I thought my point was received and that was the end of it. Some people just don't get it so now for your benefit. I'm posting his "just received response" just so you know how some people think.

I guess he is right there, he asked for it.

I still have tickets on my person if you want some mailed up. I might as well post how to get tickets mailed on here now. If you are from out of town you can mail me a cheque payable to the juan De Fuca (or JDF) Salmon Restoration Society for $35 per ticket. Include a self addressed envelope with postage already attached. I will mail your tickets back to you in your envelope. Mail to: Rollie Rose 836 Rockheights Ave Victoria, B.C. V9A 6J4

I have talked to Martin Paish the manager of Pedder Bay Marina and he agreed to be our MC. I also contacted Chef Gilbert Noussitou who heads up the chef training program at Camosun College. He has agreed to be the final speaker and give us a talk on getting the best results when cooking fresh or previously frozen halibut.
I have given more thought (a lot more) to the idea of video taping the seminar. To me it seems like a lot of work that someone will have to do and potentially a lot of wear and tear on someone's burner. The thought of the time required to not only put something together that would be in a format worth watching and then sitting down to burn DVD's is ominous. The time thing made my mind up it won't be me doing it and I'm not sure I could convince anyone I know to do it either. The recording of it is the easy part. Maybe it would be better to bring your own video camera and we could have an area that a few people could film from for their own use. We will have lots of handouts as well for you to take with you.

Rollie, you may want to get your presenters permission before you have them filmed; just a thought.
Since it would or could easily end up on You-tube any how, why not just have someone film it (again, with the blessings of the participants) then post it to You-tube? If it ends up getting lots of hits maybe you could sell advertising space or ask for donations (hatchery fundraiser) with the link or something. Not sure about this; there's lots of I.T. guys on here that know way more than me.

Terry, that is why made my decision. Just to much trouble for the time and effort and probably a relatively small reward for the centre. Would rather concentrate on doing a good job for the guys that are there and keep it simple. (for me)

While part of me likes the idea of filming the seminar as lots of good info will be presented, I also agree with you Rollie about the work involved in completing a good, finished product. I have have a little experience in taping learning sessions at my work. To make them useful and worth watching it takes someone who knows something about filming to make it watchable and audible. It also takes a lot of time to edit it to make it presentable. Figure at least 3-4 x's the the length of the video to edit it well for good viewing. I say if you can find someone who will volunteer the time to do it well, go gor it, if not, don't bother. My 2 bits.

More good news to report. The great guys at Scotty have provided us with our raffle prize. We will have a pair of the new high speed 60" Scotty Downriggers to raffle off during the seminar. Tickets will be the same as they were at the salmon seminar. One for $5, 3 for $10 and 10 for $20.00. With a potential 200 people in attendance I will also put a 50/50 together and we will have a couple of teams going around with the usual buckets and tickets. All the proceeds from both the raffle and 50/50 are earmarked for the Charters River Interpretive Centre and Hatchery. Ticket count as of today 136 sold. I'm now out looking for more door prizes and tackle donations. There will also be some special deals offered for those with tickets on products from the local tackle shops and SG Power.
