Halibut Reel

Any ideas on a DECENT level wind or conventional reel for halibut

Penn 330 and 340GTi.

I have one of each, and plan to get another 340.

Both will do the job, but I like the 340 because it is bigger and heavier. If you are not guiding, the 330 will do a good job for you when loaded with 80# TUF line.

The 320 will hold a 300yd spool of 80lb tuff line as well (picked 2 up for 30 bucks, new....right from the store, how could you pass that up?)5 years ago and now feel that I should give them a lube...not becuase I have to.
These reels have a tonne of hours on them an more than a few halis.
Any penn 300 series will do you well[8D]

I have used a penn 330 for four seasons for hali and can't complain, still works great. I recently bought another only to discover that they are now made in China. My buddy bought a Shimano Tekota 600 and let me reel in a hali last year.......butt%^#@! They are twice as much as a new Penn 330 and maybe made in China, but a great reel for the price. Now Bushy has one too...damn. I guess it depends on your budget, either way you can't go wrong.BRS

I have a couple Okumas, a convector & Catalina Line counter. If you don't mind the weight, the Catalina is really nice and the line counter's fun. I don't get on a boat much, so can't say about life-span. They don't cast worth fudge so I don't use them a lot. 300 yds 80# Tuffline.

For conventionals, West Shore's had a disc. open frame Quantum Cabo PT trolling reel in the larger size, now at a good price, and they've got a Diawa Sealine X-HSA 40, priced well. I use that and the size 20 shore casting & they've been good and they take a beating. You just have to be careful with the centrifugal weight-blocks when you open it up. They can fall off fairly easily. Light reels, very easy to maintain. The cranking ratio is I think 6:1. Nice for moving around. The 40 would hold about 300yd 80# Tuffline. The drag's great but not up to the Avet nor the Penn 525. Those stop a truck.

If you googled Penn Baja, they're discontinued and you can get a good deal for a tank of an open conventional. 300+ yd 80# Invisibraid, high narrow frame with 5+:1 ratio and a huge drag. Well-made fast-retrieve reel with guts. For its intended surf-casting purposes, it needed to be mag'd like the 525. I'm not good enough to keep it under control, so it'll go bottom fishing until I can get the mag job done.

I've used a C3-7000 for halibut to 50#, but don't know how the drag would be over that... never caught one bigger. I mostly cast with those reels too. they hold 300yd 65# Stealth. Now made in China, I've replaced the disks once and fixed the clicker. I use one of those reels every week shore-casting & the drag gets an extreme workout from the snags, bent & snapped a 6/0 octopus Eagle Claw last weekend, with the help of 2 thumbs.

Great reel.

Have fun shopping

Couple of point from a guy whose still trying to catch his first hali.

I bought a Penn 330 and a Penn Senator down in the States last year. Got the rods & reels for $100 for one set-up and $120 for the other. Who could resist?

The Senator seems better built but has no line-piling mechanism so you have to do that with a spare finger while you're retrieving line. Doing this is something of a pain in the butt and should even more interesting when the first 'biggy' latches on.

Craig at Westshore told me he prefers the lever-drag version of the 330 vs the star-drag. After using the star-drag a few times (slow-cumbersome) me thinks I'd give the lever-drag a look for my next hali reel.

Just my 2-bits.

We've caught a bunch of them over 15 years or so with an Abu 6501-C3 and 40lb braid. Many over 50lb, a few over 100lb, and one close to 250lb.

Also many with a Daiwa Sealine SL30SH. Since that one's beginning to wear out on me I replaced it with a Saltist STT30H - a GREAT small reel. Doesn't break a sweat with a 60lb halibut.

Shimano TLD 30 Lever Drag.I have 2 of these, lots of line capacity, simple preset drag system, trouble free.If your into conventional single action reels, try the new Alvey 6 1/2 or 7 1/2 one way drag.I lost mine over the side to a good fish but liked it till then.

Yeah, I use an alvey 6 1/2 but let me tell you i am switching to a mechanical reel, the single action smashed my knuckles a few to many times!

Go for a shimano trinidad tn 30. 6 2 1 gearing, very smooth and as far as I'm concerned its a great reel and wouldn't use anything else if I had the choice.

I use Senator's myself, and although they don't auto wind the line, I've had 'em since 2005, and this spring was the first year I've ever opened them up, and that was just to oil them. My 320GT's ALLWAYS wore the pawl out that auto-wound the line, and some probs with the transmissions too. The Senator would pile the line a little to one side at times, but for the most part it was not a problem.

Anybodu use the Shimano TLD-20?
Been looking at them.
Too small?
I'd get the TLD-25. I have had one for a couple years now and no problems.

Also, have had a Penn 330 for about 14/15 years and no problems with it either.

I have the penn graph lite GLD-20 and must admit it is the best reel I have ever used it is so smooth and balanced, same reels without anyservice now going on 3 years all i do is wash them down after use and re grease every couple of weeks in the holes that need it ,

as I have tried them all had a tld -20 and was kinda klumbersome and the penn 330 blew up
okumas blew the handles off
Still have a 340 and works good.

What i like about the gld-20 is it is a lever drag so you set it once and thats it very easy to operate.

See if this works???

They are all good some better than most.
