Halibut 'poon??

Hey guys,

Anybody know where I can get a pattern for a harpoon for halibut. I'm gonna make one outta stainless, but I want the right design so I only have to do it once. A hand drawn picture by one of you pros would be fine. Never been on a hali charter (yet) so I don't even know what they look like.

Thanks
Scooter

The one I use looks like a double arrow head it is by far the best one I have used I have pooned a few!! it wont pull through once its in which has happened in the past with a scotty one. Its probably cheaper to buy one go down to trotac they have them there.

It must have been many years ago when Scotty made a Halibut Harpoon-can't say I've ever seen one.
I've seen the double barbed head Wolf is talking about but damned if I can remember where.

http://www.blueoceantackle.com/harpoon_darts.jpg for an idea.

In any case you want a wooden handle and a S/S head-a S/S handle would be tough to grip with all that blood and saltwater flying about not to mention it won't float.

Of course you could put together a hollow aluminum handle fill it with foam but how much money/time do you have?

I am glad this topic came up! I am seriously thinking about switching from my arrow style tips to the long pin style because of what happened this summer. I have caught lots of halibut over the years, but nothing large until this year.
We were fishing Big Bank and hooked into a big one. As it came to the surface I planted the harpoon into it and was surprised by its thickness. In fact, I had it put some extra effort into it to stick it all the way though the fish. It was a perfect shot, right behind the gill plate.
As soon as the fish figured out that it was stuck it took off like a fright train and pulled hard against the harpoon line. Which my 300 lbs buddy had a hold of. Water was splashing everywhere. This giant was skipping across the water and jumping like a salmon. God it was fun!
By this time in the battle the harpoon tip was the only thing holding the fish, the hooks had popped out. As it claimed down, I took some scissors and cut the gills.
The fish took some short blast but quickly gave up and was along side the boat. It was bleeding badly and out of energy so I decided to tie it off and get things situated in the boat for its arrival. The clean up only took a minute or two, but when I went to pull in the fish it was gone. The harpoon had pulled thought.
I figure it was an ocean swell that caused the tip to pull through.
For example: with the fish floating on the surface
the boat followed the downward motion of the swell which caused the line goes slack. The line followed the hole in the fish downward
and because of the weight of the harpoon tip, the tip turned vertical and pulled through with the upward motion of the swell.
I know NOW to tie the tail the off, but I think this can still happen fighting the fish with the small design of the arrow tip. What do you think?

P.S. My fishing partners give me a hard time now because I lost a fish that was bigger than me. I am only 5’ tall.

To answer your question I would say no from all the trashing the fish had done as you said the small diameter rope was probably the problem it made the whole bigger. Now ill tell you the best place I find is to poon them right in the guts it goes in very easy especially,on bigger halibut also when you put it there there is rib bones to hold also its more in the center of the fish as the head and tail does the most trashing when its in the guts there is no way it can pull through its almost impossible also the guts are very flexable i have never had a poon head fall out from the gut.
When I used to hit it in the head you have to be almost exact or it wont go through and having learned from trial and error i never hit them in the head the guts are way more easier plus it wont wreak any meat.another thing I also do is inbetween my poon head and my rope about 40 ft i have a little scotsman remember jaws same thing thes are big and powerfull fish if you dont respect them the will hurt you you have to be carefull when handling them.

Theres a guy that im sure you all know, and the story who hauled one in that wasnt properly dealt with and he got a shark hook right in his calf and then the fish ripped it out for him leaving a very nice gash so be carefull!!!!!!!!!

Good luck Wolf
