Halibut Honeymoon

I have some friends on the lower mainland about to tie the knot, and both want to go fishing for halibut and cod on their honeymoon. They are both avid outdoors people and both are competent fishers in rivers and lakes. She got her first buck this past season as well. They asked me for a good location that they would be reasonably sure of getting halibut and cod. They are not keen on salmon, but admit it would be a bonus. Apparently they are prepared to pospone their wedding untill the fishing is good.
So they asked me where to go. I, who have never caught a halibut, am in no position to offer any first hand advice, but I did say I would try to find out for them.
They have no boat suitable for this type of fishing so they will need to charter. It sounds like they want to go to the west coast of the island and as long as it is accessable by road they would get there. Of course they would require accommodation as well, but apparently not a lodge.
I mentioned Thasis, Gold River and Winter Harbour, and that was fine with them. I have no experience with any of these locations, the accommodations or the charters that run out of them and am really hoping I might get some recommendations from those on this forum that have. Thanks.

Tofino also has great fishing, cute beachfront accommodations and a cool vibe round town. A lot shorter drive from the ferry as well.

If Winter Harbour interests you, give me a shout back, there are all types of accommodations and charters in the area, from full service lodges, B&B's and BYOB's, to cabin rentals and campgrounds where you supply your own food and/or accommodations. If Halibut, Ling-cod, and Rock fish are what your friends are after, then you can't beat Winter Harbour.

If great food , awesome salmon, halibut, ling cod, and red snapper is what you want, QRL in
Winter Harbour run by fb99 is the place to go. ....BB

Well it looks like the North Island, I will get in touch with them and pass on what everyone has said. Thanks to all.

Before you make the decision, wait for a bit unless you are on a tight timeline. I would consult with the bride to be again, and again. The North island is great for fishing. Might be more on the agenda for a honeymoon trip.

Gotta say, that if the emphasis is on a romantic honeymoon with some halibut fishing as a bonus - I'd be looking at Tofino (Duplex cabins at Middle Beach Lodge have hot tubs). There's several very nice restaurants in Tofino as well, and I suspect Shawn (fishtofino) could probably find some halibut. If the emphasis is on halibut with honeymoon romance as the bonus, then, by all means, go to Pt Hardy.

They like the outdoors and both river fish. There are some great steelhead fishing 5 minutes from town along with some others like the marble are nearby.

They have their whole lives to fish for halibut but only once to have a true honeymoon. Unless they are unlucky enough to get married again to someone else. I think that Tofino would make a great compromise, with more emphasis on the honeymoon, and also a great chance for some good halibut and bottom fishing. It's cheaper to keep the wife happy and keep her instead of catch and release.

Tofino is good but be for warned if the Canucks loose a game while there FishT will be grumpy :)

Well they havn't been losing nearly as much as your team, in fact exceeding pre season expectations so i'm sure i'll be in good spirits

Tofino would be my vote.... This is a honeymoon..Or alternatively Victoria or Sooke areas... A lot of charters for halibut fishing leave right from Victoria... Point No point cabins up from Sooke is pretty awesome... And that area doesn't get the offshore swells... Just in case its dicey with seasickness.

Nothing against the West Coast or the South Island for a honeymoon or some great hali fishing because they have both, but to say the North Island can't step up to the plate for both.

Amazing spot, got married there myself. Amazing private cabins on the water, great food, great beach walking, very few people, sheltered water with some fantastic fishing for hali

Another great spot, very private, personal dinners, same fishing as Telegraph

Very cool spot, amazing focus on customer service, great fishing and boats. They can put together fantastic personalized packages for couples and honeymooners.

Not sure what their budget is but this place is sick! Been over there a couple times in the last few years with the wife, they treat you like royalty. Most mistake it for only a heli resort but is open to the public and anyone can make a reservation, take in some unbelievable food, some decent fishing and an experience like no other.

But shhhhhh, there is nothing good on the north island, nothing to see here.

LOL

Hope this helps and they have a fantastic time where ever they end up going on there trip.
