Halibut - Coastwide Closure

Here is is a copy of an e-mail i sent Chris Bos...
Suggest we all get on board and maybe the SFAB can copy
DFO with our discontent over the situation.

Hi Chris,

I am very concerned over the state of our local saltwater fishery.
In my opinion, the closures on both Salmon and Halibut we've seen this year are an indication of more to come.
I am an avid angler and fear that DFO will implement another closure on Salmon
before year end which could effectively eliminate fishing for months.

I would like to do my share (if anything can be done) to try and avoid future closures.
I have written to Gary Lunn in the past expressing my opinion over the disfunctional DFO. The reply's usually take a long time coming back and are rather vague.

In your opinion, is there anything else we can do as individuals or will we simply have to abide by DFO decisions ?

I would be happy to copy this e-mail to anyone that could help our cause.

Sincerely,

Scott Craven

This is a coast wide closure and Victoria/Sooke will be part of it.
Annual limit is a good ideal, however it could be 1 per day and in possession for an annual possession of 10.

Guides providing there limit for guests are shooting themselves in the foot. You are chipping away at your own resource!
Also as stated by Wolf it is illegal for your guest to be in posession of more than their limit.
Tell your guest if they want more fish, come back anytime. (pretty simple marketing plan)

I think the regulations should be more area specific. The Renny (and places like it) meat fishery should be addressed to protect it for the future. I am not saying cut the limits or anything and I support the guides up there and anywhere else making an honest living.
Just put an annual limit on the hali catch per person and that should solve a lot of problems. Guides won't chip into their 10 fish by giving them away, people won't spend a week running limits of fish back to town and going back for more...

I don't think the Victoria/ Sooke area sees enough pressure to be caught up in this closure and cut backs.

Tips

You should staart a new thread on Salmon.
I expect that the closure you had last year will happen this year.
Might even be worse.
It has to do with BC Supreme Court case R vs Tommy et al.
DFO is usig this as their reason.
