My wife's relatives from England are visiting in July and we've promised them a day cruise and dinner. I've eaten at the Dinghy Dock and Silva Bay...but are there any gems out there that you'd recommend?
Thanks!
Dan

Hey Dan.....the Lighthouse Pub in Lyall Harbour on Saturna has a great patio/great view....gets sun til late in the day. The food isn't bad for "pub" food when I was there last year. You can coordinate with the winery there (Saturna Island Vineyards) to have them pick you up in Lyall harbour and run you "up and over the hill" to the vineyard that although doesn't have real "ocean views" it is a pretty good restaurant there with some wine tasting that can be mixed in. (I realize Saturna may be a bit of a run for you)

There is also that pub that is in Active Pass on Mayne....I can't recall the name of it; haven't been there for a number of years and heard it was for sale. Speaking of Mayne....there used to be a restaurant that was on the "Strait" side and I can't recall the name of it but it was high on a bluff and had all sorts of weird comic type artwork in there; apparently Sly Stallone had been there once.

There is always the pubs in at Ganges.....not really a huge fan in there but there are some decent spots; when you are right in the end to the right there is a pub/restaurant right on the water there.

There is a couple of spots on Pender....the Port Browning Pub (http://www.portbrowning.com/pb_home.asp ) and also The Hope Bay Cafe (http://www.hopebaycafe.com ).

Just trying to recall from all my years of cruising the Gulf Islands where else I may have been other than Poets Cove on Pender....and maybe in Cowichan Bay. I have no idea if there is anything on Thetis??

I know not Gulf Islands but the Masthead in Cowichan Bay is excellent a bit pricey, but excellent service and a view of the harbour if you sit on the deck. All food is local and from within a 100 miles.

Any spots in Brentwood Bay that you can dock and grab lunch or an ice cream.
Looking for things to do with kids while soaking the prawn traps.

Thanks,
Tips

As Pippen mentioned there are a few pubs in Ganges. One called Moby's at the head of the Harbour with a great view. It is a little busier this time of year than the other Islands and the food is ok. There is another place by the float plane dock on the left on the way into Ganges Harbour called The Oyster Catcher which as great food IMO. I have eaten at Thetis lots waiting for the prawn traps to fill up and have always had good pub food there it's just a little small place but a nice spot. Lots of places......maybe a pub crawl like FA says! lol

Having a place on Mayne, I thought I would respond to this ....

The pub in Miner's Bay is the Springwater Lodge. The food is solid pub fare (not awesome, but not bad), but the views from the deck, looking at Galiano, watching ferries roll by, typically seeing some bald eagles around, is quite awesome. They have a dinner menu too, but I tend to stick to the pub menu. It is right at the government dock, but there isn't often a ton of space to dock there. There is gas available at the dock as well (quite a challenge to find in the Gulf Islands), and if you need some bevvies or snacks for the rest of the ride, the Trading Post is right across the road from the Springwater. And yes, I believe it is still for sale. One little tidbit about it too is that it is one of BC's oldest pubs still in operation. There is also a new pub across the road (though not right on the water) from the Springwater, but I haven't been there to eat yet.

It is called Miner's Bay because it was a waypoint on the way north during the gold rush days. Also, rumour has it that many of the points on the Island have women's names (Helen Pt., Edith Pt, Laura Pt) because there were, ummmm, services available to lonely men in the midst of that long journey. Can't confirm or deny that rumour however ... ;)

The pub on the bluff that Pippen is referring to was the Mayne Inn in Bennett Bay. It is no longer under that name, as the property was sold and turned into time share cabins (don't get me started on that fiasco), but I believe the pub has now re-opened. There is a dock for use of the people going to the property or pub, but is not available for public use. I have not been there since it was turned into time share (the way the zoning for that project was approved rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, me included), so I can't comment on the food, etc. The view over Bennett Bay and Georgeson Island is quite amazing though.

The artwork is done by a guy named Peter who is still on the Island (it's mostly molded sculptures and 3D pictures of sorts, and really quite cool), and he also done a couple of children's books too. He now operates a restaurant on the island, not on the waterfront, and has his artwork on display as well as a really good fresh & local approach to food. http://wildfennel.foodpages.ca/ The island does not have a taxi service, so getting there from Miner's Bay might be a bit challenging, but locals are usually willing to pick up hitchhiker's, or it is only about 1/2hr walk from Miner's Bay as well.

The lighthouse pub in Lyall Harbour on Saturna has similar food and views to the Springwater, but may not be worth the extra distance if you plan on going to the pub and not the winery. The winery has a restaurant, though its hours of operation are all over the map.

All in all, I would suggest the Springwater for ease of access and view, the Wild Fennel for excellent food and a funky atmosphere.

I'd be happy to share more info on Mayne if you are interested.

Good info Freddy....and thanks for the "updated" situation on Mayne; I'll actually be over there starting tomorrow til the 3rd.

Funny you say that Pippen, I am heading over there from Wed - Sunday this week as well!

I always make my way to the Saturna Island Canada Day Lamb BBQ for the festivities, so I think this will be my 7 or 8th year in a row.

I'm kinda between boats right now, but used to just take my 12ft'er out of Bennett Bay. I'll likely go with some friends of ours if their boat isn't full.

Getting into any fishing or crabbing?

I am dying for my first feed of crab of the year!!

I have spent a LOT of time on Saturna.....and have attended the BBQ many, many a time.

Been fishing at Thrasher.....which has been pretty good. May do some fishing either up there or fart around in Active Pass as we'll be right on the south point of Village Bay.
