"Better than forecast abundance of Spring\Summer 5-2 Chinook leads to greater fishing opportunity for anglers in southern BC. Anglers along the Juan De Fuca Strait and southern approaches to the Fraser River are rejoicing today as DFO announced that the later timed Fraser Chinook stocks are returning at close to twice their forecast abundance. While anglers in Juan de Fuca Strait are currently fishing with restrictions designed to reduce their impact their impact on struggling earlier timed Fraser Chinook stocks, the unexpected increase in abundance has allowed for the removal of additional restrictions designed to offer even more protection to the later timed stocks.

Instead of an anticipated slot restriction preventing anglers from retaining any wild Chinook over 85 cm from June 15th to July 15th, anglers will now be permitted to retain one wild Chinook of any size over 45 cm after June 15th, and one under 67 cm. After July 15th, normal limits apply with 2 Chinook per day over 45 cm permitted and no maximum size limit.

This is great news in that it allows anglers to retain that trophy fish if they wish, but it also may reflect an improving trend ocean conditions and marine survival that could produce positive benefits to all Chinook fisheries for the rest of the season, and in to the future.
