The next Victoria SFAB Committee meeting will be held on Wednesday Nov. 1st, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. Please add this information to your appointment calendar. At this time we have not confirmed the location of the meeting, but will announce that closer to the time and provide an agenda. This meeting will be a hybrid in-person and virtual meeting. We do urge you to attend in person if possible. (Please note: we are not using the Esquimalt Anglers Clubhouse as in the past, due to internet bandwidth limit issues at that location that prevent an acceptable connection for online meeting attendees)
WHY IS THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT MEETING TO ATTEND?
As a person interested in the SFAB process whether you are an angler or not, you are permitted to attend the SFAB meetings. However, if you intend to vote on fisheries issues at local meetings, you now have to choose which committee is your home (or voting) committee. You are not permitted to vote in two or more local committees, but you can attend multiple meetings of different committees. Therefore, it is important you establish at which committee you wish to hold voting privileges.
DFO is collecting SFAB Committee attendee contact information. Mark Frisson, DFO Rec Fish, has requested local committee members provide their name, affiliation and email address so as the department may send out information in the future. (example – John Doe, Recreational Angler, jdoe@gmail.com or John Smith, Victoria Fishing Club, jsmith@shaw.ca) Please provide this information either by email reply to this meeting notice or in-person at the November 1st meeting.
Best regards, Chris

WHY IS THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT MEETING TO ATTEND?
- Grandfathering of your voting membership: As the SFAB implements its modernization procedures, new specific criteria regarding voting membership to each local committee come into force. As a previous voting member on this committee you will be grandfathered in
- New Committee Boundaries: This is the first meeting reflecting the redrawn local committee boundaries. Victoria area will no longer encompass areas north of Sidney or the Saanich Inlet. A new Cowichan Gulf Islands committee has been formed by DFO that will hold its own first meeting soon. Victoria local committee will continue to represent the areas in the Haro Strait (19-1 to 19-6) and Juan de Fuca Strait (20-4 to 20-7)
- Elections: there will be an election to choose one committee chair and one alternate for a TWO year term. (Note the committee has now only one voting seat, not two as in the past – the second voting seat held by the ACS has been removed)
- Important Fisheries Issues to Discuss: as always, the committee meeting will focus on important fisheries issues relevant to our area. The fall session meeting will review this past season and look ahead to 2024. It is important our committee provides clear approved motions for consideration in the higher levels of the re-structured SFAB.
