Fishing Desolation Sound area

Hey all,

Next week I am taking the family on a 10 day trip via the water from Victoria up to Desolation Sound. Hoping for a couple of evenings of fresh fish for dinner, looking on general advice around the area to pick up a couple of salmon. Any tips? Any good prawning in the area? I've never been there on the boat before.

In addition to Sarah point, give Twin Islands a try, fish on the SE corner. The odd halibut can be caught on the sandy bottom near the Red can, SW corner of Cortes Island............BB

Hi all,

Heading to Desolation Sound for a couple days August 3rd-5th and was hoping to do some fishing/crabbing/prawning.

We've got a small inflatable so aren't overly mobile (won't be heading to Cortez or up to Pendrell Sound).

I understand that salmon are sparse but we don't have the gear for them anyway. Was going to try for some rockfish, prawns and possibly ling cod and was wondering if anyone has some tips as to technique, tackle, location etc. Also, anyone have success catching any other types of fish on light tackle (am I right that smaller halibut can be caught or snapper?)

I am assuming given lack of discussion on the topic there aren't too many crabs to be found and I wondering if it's worth bringing up a crab trap or not. Feel free to email me directly.

Thanks in advance.

Lots of snapper 200ft plus use 5oz jig and make sure you have braided line it makes it easy to stay on bottom good luck.

A long time ago, we picked up two impressive springs trolling past a kelp bed in Okeover Inlet. Bottom fishing opportunities are available, but you need to find a spot. Prawning can be good in places. I have caught a few rock crab, but no dungies. But, haven't really tried for crab ther either. I have one secrte ling spot too. But it remains a secret. In short, there are some good fishing opportunities. But you will have to do some searching.

Trouting can be good in Unwin Lake too.

Thanks for the replies. We had some good success jigging at around 200 ft up to 80 ft in and around the inlet close to Tenedos Bay. Snapper/rockfish were abundant but the bigger fish were definitely deeper. We pulled in a decent sized ling further out at around 200 ft. Generally lots of action on jigs and appreciate the advice.
