Alpha 1, Oil leaking from shaft seal between lower and upper outdrive?

My leg oil was a little milky last fall. Split it this spring to do impeller and take a look. It appears there is some oil leaking from where the top of the lower unit shaft goes into spines on upper portion of the outdrive (pic looking up).
Is this normal or a bad seal? I was thinking the only oil discharge should be via the small oil passage hole on starboard side.
Should I be taking this to the shop for pressure test? I’ve messed around with a couple Alpha 1s but haven’t done seals in the upper portion, I think they are a bit more technical/requires special tools?

Oh maybe, is that upper joint oil bath and not just greased? There wasn’t a lot from there, maybe 1-2tbsp.

Also, can a guy get water intrusion to gear oil in the upper half due to bad seals or is it only the seals in the bottom end where water intrusion would occur?

all seals in leg will allow water in, remember the shift shaft as well. ujoints are greased no oil there.

Thanks noluck, yeah likely residual from splitting it but still getting moisture in somewhere. Taking it in next week to be pressure tested since I’ve got it removed and drained. Will also to the gimbal bearing.

I keep dreaming of getting away from I/Os, so haven’t bought the tools to service… though it is nice that they are serviceable I suppose.

There's that little double lipped oring seal between the 2 halves also. They will fail everytime if you don't make the surfaces happy with somthing like ultra black to displace the areas around the oring. It's the oil passage for the upper and lower halves

I have to put together my Alpha leg soon, what is ultra black?
