Fires 2025

Man the news sure can spin a yarn. I’ve had people reach out to me thinking of us during this fire season….and I’m like….what fires?! This summer in the Okanagan has been amazing. Rains, cooler days mixed in with some normal heat…quite enjoyable. Sure I get there are fires elsewhere, but there are fires….every…single year. All over. The news is best left in off mode as I believe it’s gone from informative to headline chasing hysteria…and look where that’s got us. Click!

The news is pretty important right now on the Island where the fire is creeping up on numerous homes and the smoke smell and ashes falling on properties makes it very real.

True that.
We had to run down to Nanaimo yesterday.
That fire at Cameron Lake is NOT simply "one" fire.
Rather it is one large one, with four or five smaller ones well separated from each other, and all but the main one low down on the ridge.
Smoke so thick you cannot see the main blaze.
Smoke all the way to smother Combs, and very thick even in Port.

No stopping and gawking of course, but I did get a few shots out the window:

Behind and to the left of that smoke is the main fire:

Evacuation Orders Issued,
My throat is right raw from both that passage and the air in town.

So while things may be all fine and dandy in the OK, they most certainly are not elsewhere!

Smoked Out,
Nog

That's incredible! Didn't see anything like that on the media.
When I got up this morning in Nanoose Bay you could see and smell the smoke. Out on the water it looked like the haze was moving south. The sun was a red ball.
Not to downplay the seriousness of any forest fire, let alone this one, but they always look more dramatic at night.

B.C. Wildfires 2025: Crews battling growing Cameron Lake fire on Vancouver Island

An evacuation order from the Regional District of Nanaimo covers a total of 393 mostly residential properties and evacuation alerts have been issued for 238 other properties

Firefighters in B.C. are in for a busy August long weekend, as the number of active wildfires was listed at 150 on Sunday afternoon, up from 120 on Friday.

Sunday, Aug. 3:

Crews worked through night to battle growing wildfire near Nanaimo

Fire crews worked through Saturday night to battle the growing wildfire on Vancouver Island that has led to the evacuation of nearly 400 properties.

The B.C. Wildfire Service says the fire burning along the challenging terrain on the shore of Cameron Lake measures approximately 3.89 square kilometres, up from the 2.45 square kilometre estimate provided Saturday.

The update says fire departments from across Vancouver Island are contributing to structure defence in the Little Qualicum River Village area and the north side of Cameron Lake.

An evacuation order from the Regional District of Nanaimo covers a total of 393 mostly residential properties, including Little Qualicum Falls Park, and evacuation alerts have been issued for 238 other properties.

The wildfire service says large-scale water delivery systems are being established and heavy equipment is working to create control lines in workable ground.

Wesley Ridge wildfire grows overnight to 494 hectares

As of Monday, August 4, the Wesley Ridge wildfire is listed at 494 hectares.

The BC Wildfire Service provided an update online at 7:20 a.m. Monday indicating that the fire had grown overnight by more than 100 hectares.

B.C. wildfire crews continue to battle the wildfire at Cameron Lake, with personnel prioritizing the protection of those who live nearby.

Crews are providing “24-hour wildfire operations” on the blaze according to the latest update on the BC Wildfire Service website.

Operations continue to prioritize protection of residences, values and critical infrastructure.

It says the fire is burning out of control, which means it’s spreading or anticipated to spread “beyond the current perimeter, or control line.”

Province advises of ‘potential sudden changes’ to traffic on Hwy. 4

Despite burning away from the roadway, travel issues could still result from a large wildfire.

The province is warning motorists of “potential sudden changes in operation of Hwy. 4” over the coming days due to the Wesley Ridge wildfire burning on the northern side of Cameron Lake.

Even with the highway running on the south side, the ministry of transportation and transit said traffic control personnel are being stationed at Chatsworth Rd. in Whiskey Creek, and the Port Alberni summit to potentially close or limit travel through the corridor.

“Having traffic personnel in place will allow the ministry to immediately respond if a change or interruption to the flow of traffic on the highway is needed by the BC Wildfire Service.”

Any highway closures or changes to traffic flows will be posted on the DriveBC website.

Was over in Alberni Friday and last night, sadly that fire made its way up and over the bluff so quickly.. shocked how close to highway on east end it is ,seems like only thing between it and highway is the small river on that end

Looks like rain in the forecast later today and tomorrow hopefully they get it and slow things down a bit. Heading to Port Thursday for weekend and won't bother if Highway is closed and they are detouring people around other side of lake

holy, drove in yesterday and ya. east end cameron looks like less than 200 metres away from the road. signs and cones in all the places seeming they will close the 4 quickly if needed. my neighbour here in bam got evacuated from his place in westridge.
