Engine problems- anyone help out an engine noob

Howdy!

Kelly, you might want to join the forum on iboats and post your problem there. There's a bazzillion qualified people ( and a few who aren't) on there who'll litterally walk you through the fix after helping you diagnos the problem.

Don't run with a leaky gear-case!

Cheers,
Terry

Hey Kelly I have a pump that you need to fill the leg with oil. If you need it call me, Roman has my #. I also just changed mine on both motors and it's easy to do. Let me know.

Sounds like when i trolled all day the oil didnt burn off and it mixes with the cooling water and leaves through the exhaust.I think i just chhanged oil brands and they say some do this more than others. I think if it was a leak it would continue to leak instead of just dripping for a few minuts. Ill go change the oil then fish and take it in if it persists. Ill also call the marine center i bought it at and just run it by the mechanic?

Its pretty windy so im not gonna risk fishing even if it is just oil buildup. Off now to the dealer to pick up some oil and talk to mechanic

Little hawk thanks thats a great link. Im replacing the oil now heres a good how to if anyone else was wondering.http://www.tohatsu-outboards.com/lower-unit-oil-change.htm

hmm, on the topic of engine problems - how about my issue - yammy 4 stroke 9.9 and the water doesn't want to come out of the outtake. I pulled the hose and 'blew it out', then tried it in the barrel, it went ok again, but then going out today, it just ceased up again. There is a slight split in the hose where it connects, but its almost like there isn't enough 'force' to push the water out maybe because of the bends it takes to get from a to b.....

any suggestions??

when was the last time the impeller was replaced. If its been more than a few years that could be your problem.

Hmm, never!? Its only 3 years old and used maybe 15 outings....flushed every year except i got lazy over last winter and didn't flush til spring - you think it would be necessary that soon?

I had a 9.9 4 stroke yammie. They have tiny little water channels through engine. Clog up real easy. After being too lazy to flush, I had the same problem. Ended up pulling head off to access water lines. They were really plugged.
Another thing with those engines is a air intake. Right next to the tell tale(water outlet),there is another hole. Its a air inlet and is just the perfect size for some little bee to crawl up there and build a mud nest and lay a larvae.I thought my mechanic was on crack when he told me to go check it. Sure enough ,there was a wad of mud/larvae in the line. Cleaned it out and all was good again.

hmmm...i kinda expect thats more the issue, but thats a little outside of my expertise...i'll have to hit up my buddy to take a look at that...

thanks for suggestions!
