Elk Lake Fishing Derby Draw Pirze

I was looking at the boat and motor being dispayed outside of Island Outfitters that's the draw prize in the April 12 Elk Lake Fishing
Derby. It's a John boat with a 9 Hp Yamaha motor. Although I fish out of a 12 ft tin boat all the time, I've never fished out of a John Boat. It looks pretty stable. Has anyone experience in using this type of boat. It looks great for fly fishing or duck hunting, and I can see myself using it moose hunting.

Yeah for those applications it's perfect. Sturdy platform that draws next to no water. It does 'plow' in choppy water.
But for an all around boat ie on the saltchuck too, it won't do.

It's a plug for the derby, and for fishing on Elk Lake, and to promote fishing in general. As for working for Island Outfitters, I do write their weekly fishing report and coordinate their Halibut Derby, but do not work in the store. The rest of my time is spent in happy retirement. Actually, the Victoria Fish & Game Protective Association is the major sponsor of the event, as they are trying to put the fish back in fish and game. And yes, I'm looking for a new moose hunting boat and the idea of a john boat had not occured to me before, but seems like a good choice now. I've bought my ticket and hope to win it this weekend.

Good on you for your efforts towards the fishery. I think I will pass on the weekend as I don't enjoy the crowd scene but its almost worth a ticket for chance at a boat. Do you have the prize list for 1st second and so on?

Apologies for an ignorant question, but is the derby this weekend for bass or trout?? Thanks.

There is a thousand bucks going to the largest trout and the largest bass. All other prizes are by draw.

I believe that IO and the boys from the Vic. Fish and Game club had a couple of boats wandering the lake that you could appproach in order to weigh fish in or you could go to the wharf at the rowing club.

Also make sure that you have all your safety gear on board, as DFO, Saanich Police and MOT all had representation on the lake last year. Fines were handed out for infractions.

Good luck and it looks to be a nice day with temps up to 19C. That should turn the fishing on.

Jessssus, 19 degrees!
I had to click off and check a weather forecast page to see what you were talking about fishhawk. And you're right, that is the prediction, with sunshine too.
Almost worth going just to be on the water in some warmth for a change.

do you have to kill your fish to enter them or is there a catch and release category?

I am not sure how they would do an "American style" catch and release fishery without breaking the "High Grading" rule in BC.

quote:Prvincial Regulations page 9

Have any live fish in your possession in
the wild, or move any live fish or live
aquatic invertebrates around the province
or transplant them into any waters of
B.C. Do not keep angled fish alive in
a “livewell” or other device, or on
stringers, and never use live fish as bait
or release your aquarium fish to the wild.
“High-grading” is illegal
.

They apply and do a variance of the regs for that event. Same as the BC Open on Shawnigan lake and the Father's day tournament at Zuiderzee.

Tickets still available at Island Outfitters. They have a poster there with all the details. I guess I better check it out before fishing the derby tomorrow. It's great to see a day when the number of boats and anglers keeep the rowers off the lake. It reminds them it's a multipurpose lake..

Thanks for the update, those are some nice fish. How was the action on the day? were there many bass caught? Any idea how many boats entered? Thanks!

250 adult tickets, 50 juniors, sold. Overall, the fishing was slow. Saw about 100 boats on the lake when I got there around 11:30 AM. I released one and missed about 8 other strikes. Good tasting smokies handed out from the IO boat. Yum.

Got there at 8 this mornin and fished till 2;30.Released 1 fish all day.And I did'nt win the boat either:(:(
