Eaten to Extinction

Good video from a few years back that describes a real growing threat to healthy salmon populations. Historically seals main diet was herring as they are easier to catch and existed in huge numbers. However, past and continued over fishing has greatly reduced herring numbers so the seals have learned to switch to salmon to survive. Once they get habituated on eating salmon they are very hard to switch them off - especially since herring numbers are still historically low.

IMHO the only group that has any chance of successfully hunting/culling seals are First Nations. I say more power to them - but this has become a very complicated issue.

To be successful they will need to create markets for seal meat, fur and products as currently there is little demand. One problem with seal meat is similar to that of the SRKW - they have accumulations of toxins in their meat and especially their fat. Will be a challenge to try to market any seal meat for food.
