See lot of boats with nylon cord tied between the end of the downrigger line and the weight ,2 or 3 ft do you catch more fish ,with the lead and the wire seperated??

I believe the cord you are talking about is ment to break before the downrigger in the event of a hangup on the bottom. I don't think there are any fish catching benefits.

It's used primarily as an extension that you can clip your quick release to when using braided line on your downrigger.
Other wise the quick release slides on the finer diameter braid.
It really has no bearing on fish catching.

OH here we go another debate coming on.... LOL LOL

The skipper of my commercial troll boat adujusts the length of ganyon to wire PRECISELY depending on which species of salmon he is targetting....

Not that they would know anything....

If you are using braided then no matter whatsoever. Stainless however...

The ganyon attached to the end of the braid is meant as a shock absorber INSTEAD of using the rubber snubbers. We switched years ago to ganyon as some of the rubber snubbers deteriorate after awhile and one day you go to pick them up and lose the ball just like that. That never happens with ganyon uni-knoted onto the braid and it still helps with shock absorption when you drop the gear fast then stop. Actually I use much heavier ganyon than my downrigger line (breaking capacity is HIGHER than the braided line). At this point though I'm more likely to rip the rail off my boat than loose the ball so if you need a break point use lighter ganyon than the braid or uni-knot on a small section of lighter braid just above the ganyon but before the main braid. Just an idea.

If you are fishing braided line sure.

If you are fishing stainless it is that and a voltage conductor.
