crabs

We noticed that we got a "Red Rock" invasion when the water temp went up during the summer. (This was on the Sunshine Coast.) Once it started cooling down in the Fall, the Dungeness returned and the Red Rocks went away.

One thing I have noticed in the last few years is the amazing number of male to female crabs. I would say that I've been getting 1 female for every 15 males in the traps (obviously over mutiple sets). It's been a long time since I saw a female crab. Anyone else notice this?

Also, anyone notice dark spots on the crab shells? I assume these are from previous injuries, but they seem to becoming more prevalent.

Damn I love this site. I have learnt so much! Thanks all, as I said keep it coming. I have a car topper so I can just launch off the beach infront of estavan. I did see some old boy using his trap off one of the harbour ferrys docks near songhees.....can you do that?

At least you can eat the red rock crabs. At times we (Comox) get invaded by graceful crabs in both the prawn and crab traps. And they are too small to make it worthwhile eating.

are these the orange wirey ones?

MaxPower, how's the crabbin'?

I understand DFO recommends limited consumption of crab caught in and around the inner harbour, due to past dioxin contamination of the harbour bottom.
I found best success off willows beach in 30'-50' of water, don't drop near channels or high tidal/current flow areas. Add an extra 5' of rope for every 10' depth, this allows for tidal depth variances and current flow. I've lost a few traps during high tide, had to go back during low tide to find 'em again.

crabbing has been very good off Willow's in about 30' of water
i have only been pulling one trap to get a limit.
almost all are male:D

Here's how I cook my crab.

1) Cut them in half with a machette.
2) Peel off the main shell.
3) Remove the gills.
4) Grasp the legs and shake out the guts.
5) Bring salted water to a boil outdoors using a propane cooker (I think mine technically was made for deep frying turkeys).
6) Throw in the crab halves after the water reachs a rapid boil and cook for about 12 mins.

Back when I was a kid, my dad used to build a fire between two logs on the beach. Initially cooked them whole, but converted to the other way at some point. I've been told that cleaning them prior to cooking helps protect you from pollution issues as compared to cooking whole. My reasoning for doing it this way is that I think the body meat tastes better, but it's a preference thing. It also seems more humane.

Any differences out there?

Hey guys!
We wanted to go crabbing on sunday but we did not have rope or a weight for the trap. My fish'n homie was chomping at the bit to go too and want to put rocks in, but I have learnt that they don't work because they are not as dence as the cannon balls. So I will prepare my self and giv'r then. Insted we just went to durrance and we finished the day with 17 trout. All C+R. Whooooo hoooo! (weight and power eggs) at the bottom as you slowly drift from the breeze.

I use the same procedure as you,Pablo. In my opinion it really helps the flavor not cooking them in gut juice. And if you have to cook them in your kitchen like me,gutting first seems to help with the smell as well.

Used to be 6 per day inside when I was a kid. We would paddle around at low tide and scoop them up.
