Coast Grizzly

This fall want to run into some of the estuaries and view the Grizzlies. Friend has never seen one and I figured we could do some fishin and exploring for the bears at the same time.
I was researching the Grizz viewing north of Rupert in the Khutzeymateen but I see the viewing there is with guides only and no public viewing. (Kinda crap but I get it!!)
Are there other areas that a person would have a good chance of sighting the bears and that you could run your own boat in??

Thanks,

I know there are grizzly tours out of Campbell River and I'm pretty sure they run up Bute inlet. I would take a run up there and check the mouth of the Orford River or the Homathko at the head of Bute.

When would be a good time in the fall to make that trip?

I have some friends going to the Orford River next weekend to see if there is any action.

There will be Grizzlies at the Phillips, Orford, Southgate and homathco right now.

If you want it to be a sure thing I'd say go to the Orford up Bute or Glendale cove in Knight Inlet.

Sounds like Bute might be the spot.. Thanks.

the natives have viewing areas apparently at the homathco. Maybe for some cash they would show you guys around.

That is what I was hoping but looks like all wrapped up by authorized tour operators only. Not able to contact Homalco First Nations directly they suggest contact tour operator.

Gotta be another way to contact them? Much rather go in on my own boat and take in the sites.

I was under the impression that private boats can go up the Khutzeymateen inlet just not the river estuary, if going to shore or entering the estuary you must use a guide?
Only a select few companies are permitted to guide in the park.
We will be going there next summer

I am not sure but it sounds like there is some sort of a check in location before you go into the Inlet. May be to control the guided visitors goin in and also not allow private boats in?? Seems as though the area is tightly controlled.

LC, have your friends gone to Orford and have you heard any word on their trip?

Yes, they just got back today they went on Sunday. I don't have many details since it was just a quick text, but what I do know is their was a dock and they didn't see any bears so it was a bust, but like fishing I'm sure that can change.

Any ideas where 2 of us could stay near Stuart Is./Bute area?

Bute Lodge booked up till Nov., Denham Bay not going to work, Dent, Sonaro at 1000.00+ bucks a night is a little steep. Ritchie Bros. is invitation only. Looking like a pretty exclusive area. Maybe I'm barkin up a dead horses A%$??!!
I'll give Cordero a try.

Might also be something in Shoal bay on East Thurlow island.... Or something in that area which isn't too far away.

I hope you find something. On a side note, coho fishing can be great this time of year and springs can sometimes be caught into October.
