can anyone tell me if McCurdy pt in saanich inlet to misery bay to the right of chrismas pt was ever a hot spot and is this where jimmy gilbert and other old timers used to fish .when I was a kid my dad and I would launch at halls boat house and fish the cement factory and bamberton everyone says that brentwood is dead but i would like to give it one more shot.I work in the area and i also herad that early springs are showing off nanaimo I think that there is fish there still all I remember is that we fished close to shore and it was deep and what depth to fish

I used to fish the Inlet in April and May back in the 80's. I fished from the power lines up to the deep hole. I hugged the ledges and fished from 80 to 130 feet on the riggers. I caught some nice fish out of there for the limited experience and time I had in the area each year. I remember having an over 30 pounder up to the boat at the deep hole one morning. An over eager client bust him off when he surfaced, gave us a good look then bolted. I remember the stone house producing fish and a couple of other ledges along the way that extended out a little further than the normal bottom contour. The calm water was great, the weed at times sucked.

Try mooching Shepperds point close up, with a green 60 g Sting Zelda. Witnessed 2 30's out of there one evening, a light year ago.....[8D]

Used to fish there lots with Ward bond when his dad had a boat at Hall's ,late 79 early 80's. lots of limits of feader springs 7 to 15 lbs, trout rods and buzz bombs, sting selda's etc. 4 guys or more in the boat lots of beer lots of fun. Used to be alot of bait balls with the birds going crazy,we would race out to them wrestling each other to try and get the first cast because it almost always meant a fish on.Ling fishing was really good too. Definately not the dead sea back then.Always wondering if it is worth trying again would be a nice boat ride anyways.

I was in there about 6 years ago, and caught and released about a dozen ling in the 10-35 pound range up near the cement factory and another place I cant remember the name of since im just a youngen. I also had a monster ling on we were in a 14 foot aluminum and it was probably about 6-7 ft long and in the 60 pound range.

The old school saying about Brentwood is "when the dogwoods are in bloom,it's time to fish Brentwood"
The winner of the Port Sidney derby this year came from Bamberton if I am not mistaken

I fished brentwood for many years in the 70s and early 80s. McCurdy Pt to the stone steps best in the spring time. bamberton from June to sept, McKenzie Bight mid summer. All of these areas were a deep fishery. Usually 150-225 with 6 inch planers. herring strip was the best and 169 and 232 plugs worked well. 225 ft with the planers would be about 135 on the down rigger. Tides do not play a major roll as brentwood fills like a bathtub. Best times were early morning and about 1 hour after sunup..then later afternoon about 1 hour before dusk. Slow troll is the best... We used to do a lot of jigging in there as well as you have a slower drift..good luck and let me know how you do

My grandfather and his dad fished the inlet during "Jimmy's" era. It was the Sooke of salmon fishing back then. Big derbies and lots of fish, Cow Bay was great for big Coho too, on the fly. I remember as a very young kid fishing with my grandfather (probably my first fishing memory)in his dads old inboard cabin cruiser. I remember him keeping me out of the cabin because the exhaust leaked and the cabin was full of fumes. I remember catching some bluebacks on that trip. The fishing in the inlet was already on the down slide by this point.
Gramps bought a cabin at Gordon's Beach in 1958 and I began spending all my weekends and summer holidays there beginning in the mid-sixties. Lots of good times and fond memories!
