braided downrigger line

x2 - I pre-tie a laniard with a swivel on one end and a small clip on the other to attach the cannon ball. I tie the laniard out of green ganjion cord, and make it long enough that the ball stops at the water line when the swivel comes up to trip the auto stop. Works perfect each time, no cannon balls swinging into the side of the boat or coming up into the roller on the boom. If I ever bust off, I have lots pre-tied and can change up in a few minutes. Nothing worse than trying to tie up during the heat of the bite.

I like to have my ball stay in the water when it auto stops just to keep it out of the way while I'm busy. Using your system that means a lanyard of like 8 to 10 feet long, does this seem right?

I'm itchin' to try this, it sounds like a good set up

I don't think you need your balls to be 8-10 feet under your boat when it auto-stops 3-5 feet of cord should work just fine.

why not just put a stopper on your line to keep your ball in the water??? works jist fine for me and simple is good.

as I measure it seems like an 8' lanyard keeps the ball about 3' under the surface when auto stopped, maybe I'm missing something

Why have your balls 3 ft down? Way easier for fish to get wrapped up and unless your in crazy water your balls wont swing much out of the water.

I guess it all has to do with the lenght of the booms and the height of the boat off the water. I was not thinking. I have 30inch booms and have about 2 feet freeboard. So 6 feet would be as long as I would need so my ball would be around a 1.5 feet or more under the water.

I am going on my 5th season with braid, and have found a few things. The swivel works by far the best as a stop, but over time it will eat through some boom pulleys.
Another thing I just started doing, is instead of 8- 10 feet of gangion, with booms extendedand balls a foot under on my 4 feet of freeboard etc, creates a pile of extra drag and had some breakoffs. I now use pre rigged 250lb scotty braid in preffered lenghts with a swivel at one end, brass snap at the other. It does not have the stretch of gangion, but i have not lost a ball since the switch.

thx ive searched through the forum as thers lots of info on this but very few guys mention what test they are using --anyone else ?

I use 130lbs Tuff XP and so far no problems, going on it fourth year. I use the rubber snubber which is supposed to break at 75 lbs, but have not had to test it yet......

Cheers

You are right the braided will not work with the box, but please lets not start the bax debate on here again!!!

Haven't used the Cabella's product. What is holding your intrest in the Cabella's? Is it a lot cheaper or something?

Have used the Scotty braid for a year, on one of two riggers on the boat, it has been great! Very little blow-back even with a 10 pound ball. Definately easier on the hands when you have to handle the line, easy to rig a ball clip (just tie a Pallomer, no swages needed), don't get the harmonic hummmm that we tend to get with the SS wire (at least haven't heard it on the braid yet). Will switch the other rigger over when that line needs to be replaced.

We weren't sure of it either when we tried it out (that is why we only did one riiger to start), but Dad and I like it for sure.:D

We don't use a black box, but for the guys that do, I don't think they have a choice but to run SS wire. (I believe you rely on the wire to conduct the current right? Correct me if I am wrong here - anyone?).

Has anyone ever used braided line on manual downriggers? I lost qiute a few cannon balls last year because of frayed cable. I just wonder how the braid would spool on without creating a ratsnest.

Whats the price on 200 ib. or 250 ib. braid? I dont know if i could justify buying expensive line for a 100 dollar rigger.

good line is gonna save you cannonballs saving you money in the long and its not much more then cable

200 or 400 ' though-- make sure your getting the 400' spool got the 400' spool at pacific net for about 52 bucks i'm hoping we'll get a couple of seasons with it
