braided downrigger line

Friends don't let friends use braided......... unless it's a derby

Just fished my second season with this year, no complaints.
Less drag/blowback , no rust, easy on the hands since there is no fraying, also super fast tying on a new rigging if you loose one in the rocks dragging the bottom. Just need to super glue your stop indicators on or they will occasionally slip.
God luck

Hello Reckless
If you super glue your stops in place is it possible to remove them should you want to?
Also given your name do you run a Pursuit?

Once you Iron out the bugs with setup etc, the Powerpro or Tuffline 200 Lb is my pick on the outside riggers, I run wire with magic voltage out the back. Oddly enough the Braid has taken the majority of fish over 40 lbs for me. Many local highliners run all wire, with good results, and many West coast Highliners run Braid and do well.
My Largest Spring, the one that got away of course< lol. Stopped in at Colite on the way from Nitnat, late September 09, It shook off, guestimate at over 60, yup I chowdered it, big head shakes, 3rd time at the boat spiiitsoed it. Got it on a large ugly, brownish, leftover haly herring, crammed into a Bloody Nose. We reset without a word and nailed a 37! Eased the pain a bit.

I know, Fish Storey, but one I will never forget.

i have found the 200# has as much blow back as wire. the other side has 150# and has less blow back. take'ur pick.

Anyone need some S/S wire - I just stripped 900 feet off 3 new riggers and replaced the S/S with braid. Make me an offer and the whole works is yours.

Tried braided out last year and have switched back to SS wire after losing about 4 cannon balls! My welded aluminum boat has a swimgrid that would immediately snap the braided as soon as it touched it. The SS last a lot longer and is more durable for my needs. Perhaps if I wasn't running over my downrigger line I'd be able to us braided but even with 15 lb balls the currents/turns managed to find the line too often.

Hmmm, interesting. I too have a welded aluminum with swim grid. We've seriously considered switching to braid soon but maybe I'll rethink that...

We fish off the mouth of the Fraser quite a bit and find the wire gets pushed around a lot in certain spots especially.

How long is your boat? What was the length of your booms on your riggers? You probley need 60in booms on your boat, so you can adjust the booms as needed. The mouth of the Fraser can be a crazy spot to fish.

Hmmm, maybe I will give the braided another try.

I've used braided for two years now on my aluminum boat, I would not change back. Sometimes the stops will slide, even the proper ones but I just deal with it.

Haven't used the Cabella's product. What is holding your intrest in the Cabella's? Is it a lot cheaper or something?

Have used the Scotty braid for a year, on one of two riggers on the boat, it has been great! Very little blow-back even with a 10 pound ball. Definately easier on the hands when you have to handle the line, easy to rig a ball clip (just tie a Pallomer, no swages needed), don't get the harmonic hummmm that we tend to get with the SS wire (at least haven't heard it on the braid yet). Will switch the other rigger over when that line needs to be replaced.

We weren't sure of it either when we tried it out (that is why we only did one riiger to start), but Dad and I like it for sure.:D

We don't use a black box, but for the guys that do, I don't think they have a choice but to run SS wire. (I believe you rely on the wire to conduct the current right? Correct me if I am wrong here - anyone?).

With braided line, I use swivels as stops.

x2 - I pre-tie a laniard with a swivel on one end and a small clip on the other to attach the cannon ball. I tie the laniard out of green ganjion cord, and make it long enough that the ball stops at the water line when the swivel comes up to trip the auto stop. Works perfect each time, no cannon balls swinging into the side of the boat or coming up into the roller on the boom. If I ever bust off, I have lots pre-tied and can change up in a few minutes. Nothing worse than trying to tie up during the heat of the bite.

That's EXACTLY how to do it! Great advice for those guys out there who are looking to make the switch! FYI we use Power Pro 220#, it's awesome stuff.

What knot do you use to tie the ganjion cord to the swivel.
Seem the ganjion is thick stuff and my regular knots maybe too large.
