Boom mountiing Scotty Orca's

what I have done

Here are a some pics up of a couple riggers I have changed over to boom mount .
First pic is using Scotty posts with dual Folbe Advantage rod holders. Dual Scotty rocket launchers were launched.
Second is using the new Folbe universal boom mount located next to motor with the 8.5 inch extension arm and using the Folbe rod holder. I like the second as it relocates the rod holder about 6 inches inside. No reaching out over the gunnel, just lift straight up and you are into the fish. The stock boom mount holder can still be retained in original position.

Got it done after work today using the #428 adapter which gave me just enough height to clear the rigger and run the rods at a comfortable angle.
Will try the Orca's out this weekend .
Looks like a much quicker release than conventional holders.:)

Carefull with those Orca's, make sure you use the locks. I had them, but i don't no more. The locks are crap too, the tension the rod puts on the rod holder when your trolling transfer's on to the lock and kinda pinch's the lock and can be a pain in the butt to unlock when ya got a fish pounding on the rod. If ya dont use the lock those holders will flip open if a fish hits, or ya pick up a piece of kelp, even if ya making a turn, and you can say goodbye to your Islander and Fenwick. Like others have said here use a teather, but that sucks too if ya ask me, unless Hali fishing.

I've never heard of this before unless the rod was not positioned properly and Orca wasn't shut tight.
will give them a try and see how it goes.

We switched to the same set up as craven. It is nice not to have to lean out to grab the rod, especially for the vertically challenged. You do have to give a firm upwards lift with both hands, straight up to release the holder. So far the set up has worked out for us.

X2 I have been using the Orca setup for the past year and a half with nothing but positive results.

I got a pair of Orcas for fathers day this year and love the quick release and I also like that the Orca's help keep my downriggers alive when heavy handed guests are trying to wrestle my rods out of the stock Scotty rod holders. The only issue I've had after a dozen or so trips is the foam rod grips are taking an absolute beating. On one rod, the foam looks like my dog has been chomping on the end of it. I'm trying to be much more careful with the rods but I think I will need to find some sort of wrap to keep the foam alive. Has anyone else had that issue with the Orcas?

I'm wondering if they changed the design on the Orca's, maybe the newer one's are better than the older one's.I got mine when they first came out and i remember reading a thread on this Forum about how much better the Folbe's were. I know GDW doesn't like the Orca's very much.

7Deuce, I have used them extensively with foam grip rods as well as cork and I do not have any wear issues on the grips whatsoever. Must be the angle of the holders? I have them mounted basically inline with the downrigger boom, means they sit perpendicular to the gunnel. Now, under the pressure by the rod and line they twist about 20 degrees towards the back of the boat. In that config they work excellent I find. And as said before, I cannot imagine how a fish pulling on the rod could manage to open the holder itself unless brutal force is applied or the extention stick breaks. Can only see that this happens when a large hali is left unattended yanking brutally on the rod. I use other holders for hali fishing. For salmon, I haven't seen a better system yet.

While reading this thread I was wondering the same thing. Before I installed my extentions and Folbe's I fished on a buddies boat that had the Orcas. It's just my opinion but I think the Foolbes are much smoother working than the Orcas and a better product. Love my Folbes. Maybe the Orcas have gotten better in the last few years.

Chris, I have mine mounted on the gunnel (not boom mounted) about 14" back from the rigger. Maybe that makes a difference? Maybe I have them angled back slightly? If I'm the only one with this issue then it must be user related...

Thanks for the reply.

My very first time with my Orcas, my rod corks on the port side was destroyed right down to the blank. I also almost lost my rod twice. I was not happy. The rod on the starboard was fine. I later realized why. How it "binds " in the holder is different. On the port side, it contacts the opposite side of where it hinges. The solution ( I think) is to run the rod on the port side upside down( with the locking mechanism downward.) Then it binds differently. If this doesn't work, look for my ad for two orcas in the buy sell trade section of the forum.

I went and spent some time in the shop looking at my Orcas and looking at the damaged rods and I figure the majority of the damage is coming from the edge of the clamshell that are very sharp at the corners right where my finger is pointing in the picture. I might file that edge down to a round as I don't think it will negatively impact the operation of the unit but might save a few rods.

Huh, interesting! That is definitely a different model as mine do not have this little protrusion that chews up your rod handle. Mines are flat and smooth there and I have never seen mine opening that way by itself. I assume you have an older inferior model. Go and give the newer ones a try - you will like them!

You got it Riverboy, exactly what i was saying, picture is worth a thousand words. BEWARE

I have used these holders on two different boats and each time almost lost a rod. I can only think that if I had some moron on my boat with the same problem I'd be buying a new rod.

Nice idea but not dependable enough for me to be buying.

Over lunch I checked in 3 different tackle stores here in Vic and no store had these shoddy models that you show in the picture anymore. They all have the newer and reliable model. You can safely use these.
