Bamfield Poett Nook Reports Spring/Summer 2012

hali inside finally warmed up for me, lost a monster and landed 38, 28 25,18.. monster almost pulled me over

curious if the majority of the boats fishing inside for Hali are anchored or is trolling bait the ticket?

anchor inside,, trolling would be a no-go,,too much structure,, i have back trolled inside for years and it works also..just a lot more attention to lines and bottom.

Imperial Eagle Channel between effingham and kirby has a good stretch that looks like you could give er a troll...does it produce from time to time?

never done it.. we anchor on or to the side of structure,, only really trolled for hali on the banks.

Hooked For Life:
GO for a boat ride. Only bad can come from trailering your rig on that road. Broken kicker brackets, busted axles, flat tires and holes in your boat will make the little you save on fuel seem pointless. Seen all of these happen and more than once for all of them too. Also The brotherinlaw's rig burned to the ground on that road as well.

Sounds ugly I know, but even wen the road is good it is still ugly on a rig of any size. And if it is dry then there is dust. LOTS OF DUST> been doing it for more than 20 years and would never trailer my rig . Way too nice a boat ride anyway.

Sounded like tons of fish were being caught near Kirby and backside of Fleming yesterday. Unfortunately my main engine died just before Pill Pt. so I was only able to fish around the gauntlet or commies before starting a looong slow trek back. We got one spring and while playing it we were drifting towards a gill netters net but we were still at least 30-40 feet away from it. The fish may have got within 20 feet of it but that would have just got him another fish and meant none for me. Well he stormed over to us, screaming and cursing asking what we were doing so close to his net. Couldn't believe it. Some real idiots out there.

I'd scream at you too

Ok, care to share why? I'm allowed to fish too aren't I? I talked to numerous old sport fishermen at China Creek and they all told me they would have told the Commie to F right off. I was polite, I apologized and moved away as quick as possible. It was not our intentions to go that close but in the excitement we merely drifted that direction. Some of the commies put there nets directly in high traffic areas making it virtually impossible to not get within 30-40 feet so what's the big deal? No harm no foul, I say.

I just meant you gotta control ur boat, simple as that. If a chinook gets you so excited that you almost run into somebody else thats not good. Commies have just as much right to be there as you do, gotta share the water and be respecttful of everybody out there. More commies coming in the week ahead too.

Commies respectful to sporty's ? give me a break...

i got swamped twice last outing , once with a fish on , including another boat 30 yards away that also had one on...split us right down the middle lol,,,
both of us had some choice words exchanged , trust me , 0 respect from these bananas , right at the Bamfield wall ,
just pulls into the beach , starts letting it fly , right in front of a gd pack of boats , not gonna say there all like this , but these idiots
couldn't care less , his remark to me was , you know that this a Commercial Opening " Eh "

pulled the pin , left in disgust...

( its here ta stay for now , guess we just need ta deal with it )

enuff of this crap , lets move bak onta fishin ,

Well we had just got our lines down 5 minutes prior so we weren't expecting the hit. I know they have every right to be there. I grew up on my dads gill netter. They guy didn't need to flip out, there's was plenty of room and we were already headed away from his net when he threw his temper tantrum. Moving on...

fn commies,,those idiots netting fish should be shot along with the dfo idiots,,can't anybody see that it is the netting of our salmon that is going to kill it for everybody,,it's only a matter of time,,unfortunately..

As an ex-pitcher, I've still got a pretty strong and accurate arm. There would be some 3oz. weights hurled in his direction! The law is just that, and everyone needs to abide by the law and allow everyone to fish. Being disrespectful and going out of your way to antagonize someone, commie or sporty, is just plain wrong! There should be someone who you can report this type of behavior to.

Well I finally made it to the coast to fish and I had the best fishing trip of my life. My friend Mac called me Friday and said to be ready in 2 hours, we are leaving Vancouver and heading to Ukee. I had groceries and coolers of ice ready to go before he even hung up the phone. Mac, his fishy friend Jeff and myself were on route for the coast in his 33' blackfin by 5pm. We were cooking steaks in a sick house that Mac set up in East Sooke by 9pm. Pretty sure we went right by Wolf's place if your in East Sooke, looked like your rig. I barely slept that night as I WAS SO STOKED for fishing the west coast . We decided to make a run for swiftsure in the morning as the conditions were like glass. Not going to lie, the swell and fog did have me feeling a little woozy by the time we hit the bank, which was concerning as the boys said it was actually pretty sweet conditions. They had a good cure for the sickness and we were slaying fish in no time. We had fish on before we even had a line down. The ho's were savage off the bank, easy limits of good size hatchery coho and a couple good size springs. Didn't matter what you put down, by the end we were just running big plugs and spoons down deep but the ho's were still all over it. We switched up to to try for hali during the slack and this was exciting for me as I had never caught one . We got lucky, all three of us had one in the boat in short order. Biggest was 30 which is physically bigger then I imagined. Watching Jeff gaff the halis and wrestle them down was entertaining to say the least. Power bait worked for the halibut doing drifts. Pretty easy to fish halibut without the anchor set up. After limiting out on the hali we made a run for Bamfield to fuel up the beast and grab some supplies . We trolled into Bamfield as we had a spot left for a big spring but only released small ones. Cool place to fish , lots of different areas to hit. Pretty sure I saw Osama at the general store in bamfield but you left before I had a chance to say Hello. Turtle Island was the end of the line for day one of fishing. What a sweet place to drop the hook. Morning came quick after eating and then processing fish and Ukee banks were up next. South bank was the first stop and the seas were big, 1 something swell with 5 foot wind chop on top . I felt good day 2 as Renfrew primed me I guess. The fishing was very productive with lots of wild coho and pretty good for springs. Jeff put 2 in the boat around 25 pounds and lost a big heavy brute that spit the hook at us after a long fight. Pretty funny playing fish looking up at them in the swell. All the big springs came on a glo hoochie with a flap on the head. We broke that off and didn't get any more big ones. Small ones were hitting everything I put down, including daisy chain with flasher and bait above it. Pretty much had our limit on day one off inner south bank. My wife and baby Nakai made the drive from the mainland to join us for dinner at a friend of Mac's and Jeff's. It was nice to meet some of the friendly people of Ukee. My wife, boy and I slept on the boat and it was pretty cool seeing the fleet heading out in the morning, got me pretty stoked. The pouring rain on the other hand had us going onto land to grab breakfast and lunch. The Blue Room was the first pace we saw open and I say it was pretty tasty. The locals told us they did good off light house bank the day before so that was our first destination . The wife really wanted to bottom fish. That bank was pretty slow for us but the wife did get her hali using power bait again. We made a couple of location change ups, including south bank again and finished off at a spot called big bear in close ? Must say fishing was much slower, we had to work for them and did't get our limits. Didn't matter, already had an amazing trip . I would have to say swiftsure had the most explosive fishing and south bank was next. Can't wait to visit every one these places again. I am border line thinking of a career change to switch locations from Whistler to the coast lol. White hoochie was overall top producer. The bigger springs came between 130 and 80 feet but we were getting them from 180 to 30 out of ukee and everywhere the first day off swift sure. Fun watching coho attack the gear sitting on the water waiting to be set to the rigger. Can't wait for the next trip.

We were out at Cree and on inner S. Bank on Thursday and Friday. As in your excellent report, the coho were kamikazi crazy. We had four take big spoons right off the surface. I was wishing I'd brought bucktails and light spinning gear - next time. The keeper coho (about 50/50 - hatchery/wild out there) are in the process of becoming candied salmon right now! We were fishing salmon bellies so dogfish were a nuisance for hali fishing. Limit of Springs, too and great weather!!!

Back from a weekend at the Seabeam. 20 guys on 6 boats. Fish pretty much everywhere, but it was a right place right time sort of thing for the good fishing. My boat (4 guys) came home with 24 split fairly evenly between coho and chinook. All the boats brought home a bunch of fish. Large fish few and far between. Didn't get into any 'quality' fish until this morning at Meares. Some large pilchards in the stomachs of the two high teens we took from there so maybe time to dust off the plugs. Most of the springs caught by our group were in the 6-10 lb range with a few in the teens. Definitely no trophies this trip, but lots of meat for the freezer.
Both evenings (at near dark) and mornings there was a hot bite right in the Bamfield harbour mouth.
One boat got full limits of hali's out at Amphrite (sp?) including a nice 55 lb.
Dodged seiners all the way up the canal today and nets in the river. Saw quite a few sockeye jumpers on the trip today as well, so hopefully a glimmer of hope for a rec season.
Gas is $1.60/L in Bamfield

Just got back today, steady action every day but no big fish. Kirby and pill point both productive. Tons of coho everywhere all in the 5-6lb range. Went offshore for halibut but disappointed with only dogs long way out for that result. Seven other boats around us all the same. Going back Tuesday.
Cheers peter
