That's the UV Bomb by Captain Downriggens. That's teamchachi's picture. He has had success with it up in Barkley.

The green thing looks like a piece of straw. Maybe it gives it a bit more whip?

Captain Downriggin's is a business man. That's a Luhr Jensen B2 Squid---a 3 inch or 4 inch one. It's in the "purple haze" UV tint. All he did was buy 'em in bulk and then tie them up and sell them as he is.

All the hootchies he lists on his website are Yama****as.

Don't fall for this and just make your own.

Thanks for the info on the Luhr Jensen B-2. I agree with making your own. A lot cheaper and I can pick my own leader material, hooks ect.

OCTOBER 8th 2008
DOUG LINDORES
SLIVERS CHARTERS SALMON SPORT FISHING

The salmon returning back to the various rivers and streams in the area are decent in numbers. The Stamp Falls Counters from October 1st through October 6th recorded a day time count of 2,832 Chinook and 4,390 Coho. October 2nd saw the largest number of Chinook come through at 651, while on October 1st the largest Coho day for early October was 1,090. Other tributary streams and creeks seem to be doing well. There however is need for plenty of water to enter many of the tributary creeks as Great Central Lake is very low in water due to concerns of the main dam. I suppose we have to hope there is plenty of rain in October and November.

Fishing in the Stamp has been off and on. Fly fishing has been good for Coho and some of the late Summer Steelhead. One has had to make sure that moving around the river is easy to find the fish. Recently we have had groups that have fished both the Stamp and the Nahmint. Good numbers of Chum are showing in the Nahmint where some great fishing has occurred. Sarita has also had some good Chum fishing where the fish are up to just over 20 pounds. We are expecting some great Coho and Steelhead fishing in the Stamp during October. Coho numbers to date through the counters are approximately 35,000.

Port Alberni Inlet, Barkley Sound, and Ucluelet fishing has been off and on. The Inlet has had plenty of Coho, Chinook, and Chum but it has been difficult to get anything to bite for the last two weeks. Guides John and Mel have had a few difficult days but the Prawn fishing up until September 30th was unbelievable. Traps have had from 60 to 100 prawns per trap per set in various Port Alberni Inlet areas. Cous Creek has had an incredible number of Chum. Late last week a net fishery for Chum showed unbelievable numbers. Some sets came up with 200 and 300 Chum Salmon. Chum salmon put up an incredible battle and seem to smoke very well. Barkley Sound and Ucluelet have had some beautiful water days up until last Wednesday October 2nd. However a weather change made it difficult for boats to get out over the past weekend in the Ucluelet area. Fishing for guide Mike up until early October was good just around South Bank and out at the Big Bank. Halibut at 200 feet at Big Bank are still in pretty good numbers as are feeder Chinook which have been in the deeper water. The feeder Chinook seem to come up into shallower water early in the day and around tide changes. The feeder Chinook have been averaging 10 to 12 pounds. Glow hootchies especially a well known Ucluelet hootchie known as “the ugly” has been doing very well. Guides Mike and Al both feel the halibut and feeder springs will be excellent until the end of October. Barkley Sound has had a few good Coho fishing days. Guide Doug fished Coho with some good results the last weekend of September. Pill Point was still reasonably good with some nice silver fish. The Coho were hitting white hootchies especially the AORL12 hootchie. Two green hootchies the spatterback and the T Rex had some very good results. Many people will use the Thanksgiving weekend as there last fishing days of the current year.
Most fisher people will target Coho while some will also try for Chum which still should have good color as they are not yet influenced by fresh water while in the waters of the Sound.

Guided trips will continue on the west coast up until the end of October. Stamp River fishing will continue with salmon and Summer Steelhead. December will see the Winter Steelhead season begin. Our fall packages for fishing and accomodation is incredible. Please contact Doug for further information and possible river trips through mid November.

Well , Just got back from Poett Nook , was there for 5 day's , fished 2 of them ,first , the camp was EMPTY !! Never seen it this quiet. The day's were warm , nights were frosty. Thought I'd give up my sleeping quarters to my Aunt and Cousin , I would sleep in the boathouse, in a nice warm new 4 man tent, with a real comfy blow up mattress . Was fast asleep , when , around 1:00 am, I was awoken to a loud crash , opened my eyes from a dead sleep , thought that this was a little odd , no wind , rain , fairly calm quiet night , slowly dosed off again , minutes later , was awoken to heavy breathing , sounds of a bag being torn up , my tent pinned up against one side of the boathouse , was being pushed and bumped fairly aggressively. I now went into complete hysteria , started whistling as loud as I could , Screaming for my cousin to come out and help me , there was something extremely large outside trying to enter my boathouse , Randy came out with a large flash light, and real loud screams and yells to help move our intruder away ,I now came running out of the tent , B-Lined it straight to our RV , grabbed my flashlight , poked it out my door , to see a huge , big , fat Black Bear staring at me like a Raw Steak , Let me tell ya , My heart was pounding like never before . Man was that bloody Freaky !! As the weekend went on , sleeping comfortably in my RV now , with my family , My tent will never see FD near it again . Wow !! Turns out their were alot of Bears around trying to feed on the vast amount of large springs swimming around the Nook . This is from the fish the camp raises and releases out of the marina each year I believe . There were alot and they were huge , you can see them swimming in schools all around the shorelines , especially at low tides , no ideas boy's , these fish are dark, Ugly , looking to spawn !!
So , Fishing , We did get out twice , we fished the wall for a few passes , nothing , no bait , no marks of any sorts , headed out to 6 mile , hit a 15 - 20lb Hali right away , then hit a feeder of around 8-9 lbs , made a couple o passes at 7 mile , hit another nice Hali right away , trolled for another 1/2 hour , moved to Rats Nose , water was flat , no boats out at 6 and 7 , only 2 others at Rat's . anyway's , we hooked into 4 more nice Hali immeditely , hit 3 more nice feeders between 8 -12 lbs as well , all Hali's were caught on the " Turd " including 1 feeder !! ( Great Hooch ) other fish were on Army Trucks , Glo Flo's 5.0 Coyote's and Anchovy , chrome green heads , Plastics were favored !! Second day out , we again went off shore , this time only to 6 mile , for only one wild 12 -13 lb Coho , on a Coyote , 42 in. leader as well. All and all , weather was great , fishing was better tha expected , we did lose a nice spring close to the boat that was close to 25 , maybe 30lb , real bulldogger !! My aunt felt terrible !!It's all good.Oh Yeah , Crabbing was great , man were they firm and tasty !! This will be my last report this season , back in March , are any of you going to fish the march derby there !! , Let me know , I heard it's a blast. Did not take to many pic's this outing , but , I did kinda like this shot ,

Take Care , Talk soon , FD ;)

FISHING REPORT: PORT ALBERNI INLET, BARKLEY SOUND,
UCLUELET (WEST COAST) SOMASS-[STAMP RIVER SYSTEM

OCTOBER 29TH 2008
DOUG LINDORES
SLIVERS CHARTERS SALMON SPORT FISHING
CIMG6458.jpg

CIMG6435.jpg

October has come and is almost gone. The weather has been wonderful over the past week has made fishing on the Stamp River just a wonderful place to be. Barkley Sound and the Port Alberni Inlet salmon fishing have pretty well been over for the 08 season for sometime. The salmon fishing guides and salmon fishing charter boat operators who guide for salmon in the Port Alberni Inlet and Barkley Sound have put their boats and equipment away for the season and wait for a new year. Offshore has had some days when there has been no wind from the southeast and the feeder Chinook fishing at South Bank and The Big Bank has been fairly decent. At the moment our best fishing results on a continuing day to day basis is the Stamp River system where there are plenty of fall steelhead and Chinook and Coho which are still entering the system daily.

The six day period from October 22nd to 27th show both the Chinook and Coho migration through Stamp Falls as declining rather rapidly. The Chinook escapement over the time frame was 1,500 which bring the total count to 20,600 to date. Coho migration was only 500 fish bringing the Coho count to 39,700. A recent swim-in to Robertson Creek Hatchery and bio-samples from the Stamp River dead patch have shown a better female to male ratio at 3 to 1 with the males being more predominant. The Robertson Creek Hatchery is now very close to it Chinook egg target. Some of the Chinook and Coho are spawning in the river as wild. This has really brought in good numbers of steelhead which are feeding on the dropped eggs.

Somass-Stamp Fishing
Our fall fishing-accomodation special still is on for the rest of October and November. The Chinook are getting rather discolored but there are still some bright silver Coho entering the system. With the high egg drop there is plenty of fall steelhead. Steelhead fishing charters and guides are doing extremely well in drift boats. Guide David and Mat are fishing on the drift and casting with floats and hitting the river bottom with lures that have salmon eggs attached. The steelhead are hitting the salmon eggs and many guests have been treated with some fabulous fishing experiences and hitting a good number of fish per day. One set of guests who all had experience on the river hit 20 fish in the course of the day. On average those fishing with a river guide are hitting at least 5 steelhead per day. We are expecting the fall steelhead and the Coho fishing to continue for three or more weeks. In December the Winter Steelhead season will begin.

Port Alberni Inlet
Barkley Sound
Salmon fishing provided by salmon fishing charters and guides has been pretty well over for sometime. There have been a few sport fishermen fishing close to the Bamfield Wall with a little success on feeder Chinook. One active sport fisherman fished three miles off of Beale with a friend and had some great fishing in 150 feet of water picking up four fifteen pound Chinook. The salmon hit anchovy in a glow and chartreuse Rhys Davis teaser head. The Port Alberni Inlet has been very active for prawn fishermen. October 31st may see the closure of prawn fishing for awhile. The Inlet has been covered in traps and many sport prawners who are putting out traps are having wonderful results close to China Creek. Many traps are in the Underwood area and the narrows area where the fish farm once was. Prawners have been asked to throw females back into the water.
Look for updates and fishing rules on this fishery later in November.

Ucluelet

This is often the time of year when it is difficult to fish offshore. The southeasterly wind can get rather snarly and make it impossible to fish. DFO has just recently curtailed sport halibut fishing for the remainder of the 08 season. Guide Mike has been out two days over the past eight and has had some wonderful feeder Chinook fishing out at South Bank and TheBig Bank. South Bank has also been an area that has been fished by the commercial troll fleet. Many of the fish are in 100 to 150 feet of water and are small. They are ranging 7 to 12 pounds. Big Bank has had some bigger Chinook in deep water. The Chinook are up to fifteen and sixteen pounds and are in almost 180 to 190 feet of water. On tide changes they are coming to higher depths looking for bait. Mike has been using a turd which has orange and black flakes on it. He refers to this hootchie as an UGLY. We are hoping to get out fishing a few more days in October and November. If the weather continues sunny and warm and low or moderate outflow winds arise we should be out a few more days.

We are currently fishing in the Campbell River area in Browns Bay. The weekend that just ended had the Chum Derby in Browns Bay. Chum salmon are great fighters and are fairly good eating when smoked. A lot of individuals book Chum fishing days and play these twenty pound whoppers five to ten times per trip. If interested please call Doug.

There has been rumour that the Port Alberni Inlet will once again be open to a Sockeye sport fishery in the summer of 2009. Please feel free to book trips or receive more information on this fun filled whole family fishing activity.
