Bamfield Fishing Reports

I would launch in Port at Clutesi Haven launch. They charge you to launch and you can park across the street for free. You avoid all the pitfalls of THE ROAD. No dust in your boat and no bumpy road. Green Cove store used to have ice, if not, Poett Nook does. Good luck.

Hey Fog ducker..really appreciate the tread and all the info.

Heading up to bamfield 9/5-9/7. Be glad to coordinate and share any activity on the vhf those days as well as serving a cold one at the dock at the end of the day for anybody wanting to stop by to swap info on the day.

The Fog Ducker

Just got back from a week fishing inside.
We worked Pill Point hard, tried Diplock and Swale.
It was very scratchy - 8 rods for 4 days - 24 fish.
A 32, 30, 24 and the rest were teenagers. Lots of Coho.
Magic depth was 45 feet. This time anchovy out fished the white hoochie by 4 to 1. Although the white hoochie caught the big one at Swale (still at 45 feet though).
We didn't see many fish caught by other boats.
I think there's going to be some frustrated fisherman at the derby this year. Definatly not abundant like years past but a bit better size when you do get into them.
For the second year in a row my motor went on the last day - this time the timing belt! Sucks putting down the canal on your kicker! 3.5 hrs in case you're wondering.

Good Luck

2MD...thanks for the report....sorry to hear about your motor issue.
did yo get your coho's at 45 feet as well and how about wild to hatch ratio? what worked best on the cohos? taking a friend up that would have a lot of fun just tugging some ho's around...

thx

We were hoping for more springs - I'd say a quarter of the fish were coho (5 fish) of that, I think two were hatchery.
Again, most were at 45 feet. Anchovy in anything green was the ticket. We were trolling @ 2mph. If we dropped below that, we would start to get dog fish.
On the last day it was rough and i was trolling faster (3mph) and got a couple right off the bat.

nice test............... works and looks great................ And that is a sun fish they sometimes get caught up in the currents but there home base is in the south pacific...............

Just back from 4 days at Bamfield. 18 fish, 20lbs was the biggest spring, 5 coho. Lots of hours on the water but most fish caught between 9:30 and 2:00. We were three for 4 hatchery Coho off Edward King today I think it would be hard for anyone to miss there. They were hitting anything white and wiggly. Shaker madness however. Didn't get outside at all. Sounds like we did better than most. Beautiful weather Sat,Sun and today.

Can anyone tell me where Swale rock is located?

So that was you at Ship rock? we were on the other side of it doing just as well.. we were 3 for 3 on the hatchery coho. and lost a real big coho screaming along the top of the swells. Lots of small Coho, should be a good year next year for them! All in all we got 14 fish in the 2.5 days we fished. Not too good, not too bad, some periods of no activity made it hard to stay awake, but it was sure nice overall. I think were were onto the fish more than most, like you say, our biggest was only a 20 pound spring also, but we had a couple of Coho that gave that spring a close run for it's money ;)

Swale is at the bottom end of the broken group.. on the Bamfield side.

Seining is now a very selective fishery...more so than trolling.(in my opinion)The seine fleet is no longer allowed to ramp large amounts of fish over the stern.
They have to bring the fish along side the boat which are swimming freely (untouched) then samples are taken to see if its the fish that they are after.
Only then can they proceed to load the vessel by brailing small amounts of fish at a time with little bycatch and if there is they are to be placed in live tanks onboard the vessel to be released later.(which is also manditory)
There are also Observers onboard the majority of the vessels and Each catch is inspected upon delivery to the plant.

Just my Opinion.......

Cheers

I was in a whitish (paint cancer) Lifetimer centre console with a blue sunbrella. I heard some breif chatter on the radio that when it was dead at Wittlestone and The wall the bite was on hard at Swale.

Port Alberni Salmon Derby Results
It is almost mid September and most people are wondering what happened to the summer, which seemed to sweep by so quickly. The Port Alberni Salmon Derby, which often marks the Chinook season peak in the Port Alberni Inlet and Barkley Sound ended just over week ago with rather mediocre results. This year marked the 37th year for the derby and most people will not deny that the fishing especially in the Inlet was slow. The total catch was half of that of most years with only 1,200 salmon recorded. The big rain which began around the 20th of August and continued until the Friday before the derby sent a lot of salmon racing to their various rivers. Many of the Chinook and Coho which return to the Port Alberni Inlet are Robertson Creek Hatchery fish and they entered the Somass river system very early. With mother nature playing such a huge role in the sport fishing industry many fisher people went home without any opportunity of hooking into a big fish. The salmon moved right up into the river mouth by derby time and have continued this trend up until now. Fishing for a few extremely fortunate fisher people was lucrative in the upper inlet as some of the derby’s biggest fish were caught in the area. Peggy Ohama of Port Alberni caught the derby’s biggest fish which weighed in at 37.8 pounds. The Chinook was caught on the Monday of the derby at Holm Island on a large pink (bubble gum) hootchie. This fish won Peggy $3,000 for the biggest fish of the day and an additional $7,000 for the biggest fish of the derby. The derby’s second largest Chinook was caught by Joe Vodopija and weighed 36.8 pounds. Joe caught his prize winning fish at Pill Point located in Barkley Sound on a Purple Haze hootchie. Port Alberni’s Darrin Olson won second prize and $2,000 on the Labor Day Monday. Darrin’s prize winning fish was caught around Holm Island where many of the derby’s daily winning fish were caught. Derby plans for 2009 are already underway. Salmon Derby President Dan Washington will be gathering with his crew of volunteers over the next few weeks.

Port Alberni Inlet
Barkley Sound
The salmon fishing in the Inlet has been very difficult for the sport fisherman. There are loads of salmon especially in the upper portion of the harbor but there just does not seem to be a bite. Chair person of the Alberni Sport Fishery Advisory Committee Bob Cole was quoted just recently as saying “there is clearly not a lack of fish but the culprits unfortunately have been the rainy weather conditions, water levels, and outdoor air temperatures which have dramatically cooled the river water temperatures.” “The Chinook and Coho which usually hold in the Inlet and school up are continually migrating towards the river which does not create good sport fishing conditions.” Weather conditions for the next two weeks look favorable. Incoming Chinook and Coho may very well school in areas like Lone Tree Point, Polly’s, and China Creek. Coho in past years when conditions were favorable have schooled in huge numbers down at McTush. Hopefully this occurs in order that some of the Inlet season is saved.
Barkley Sound has had some favorable fishing. Many Slivers Charters Sport Fishing guides have been fishing the sound during and after the derby. Guide John had guests from Calgary and guide Brent guests from Edmonton for the three days of the derby. Each group left with a mix of twelve beautiful Chinook and Coho. Johns’ biggest derby catch was close to30 pounds and Brents’ was 29. Over the past week both Doug and Mel have had some success. Mel has done well on the Bamfield Wall, Wittlestone and Kirby Point on Chinook and Coho. Over the past weekend guide Doug had some great success at Gilbraltor Island and Harbor Entrance. Anchovy in a clear, purple haze, and chartreuse teaser head all seemed to be working very well. Some of the old standby hootchies like the white AORL 12 and Spatterback and the Halloween just seemed not to excite the fish. Dougs biggest Chinook for guests on Saturday was a bright 22 pound Chinook. The largest Coho weighed in at 15 pounds. This fish hit a purple haze anchovy teaser head with a 6 foot leader and a green hotspot flasher. Sunday guests from Vancouver pulled in five salmon in which three were Chinook and two Coho. The largest Chinook was just under 20 pounds and the biggest Coho about 12 pounds. Anchovy trolled behind either a gold green or gold red hotspot flasher were again working well. Pill Point and Assets Island have both had good reports. The fish seem to be moving because there is either a good bite in the morning and the next day the bite is in the evening which often means the fish have moved up into the Inlet and a new school has arrived. Blood Bay behind Pill Point has been fairly steady each day. There seems to be a good number of fish at Little Beach off of Ucluelet which tend to be Barkley Sound and Robertson Creek fish. These fish will come into the Sound daily. Often if you are at the right place at the right time one can get into a decent number of biting fish. We are anticipating another 10 days of decent fishing in Barkley Sound. The weather looks great and there should be some wonderful Coho fishing.

Ucluelet
Guides Mike and Al have continued to have some excellent halibut and salmon fishing. The Big Bank has offered some great September halibut fishing. Jigging for Mike has been the answer as guests are pulling in their limits daily. After the early morning hali fish Little Beach and The Wreck and also South Bank have been the main choices for salmon. Little Beach has been often the number one choice as a good number of fish are running through as they make their way into the Sound. Various white and green hootchies are working as are anchovy which again seem to be fishing salmon well. Both guides have found the glow teaser heads to be working well. We are expecting the Ucluelet fishing to continue into October. September is often the no wind and no fog month and the ocean can be wonderful on a late summer early fall day.

Somass-Stamp River
Fishing in the river aboard jet boats is just beginning. The river will have a surplus of Chinook and Coho. In the mix will be late summer steelhead. This fishery in the Stamp River is going to be very good. There are still openings in October and November for a fishing-accomodation package. Call Doug for details.

Well , Just got back from the Nook , Unfortunately, I was able to only get out one day , saturday morning , We were told the inside was still a little on the SLOW side , so we headed west , started at 2-3 miles off Beale , looking for the reported " School " of Coho moving through , Dean hit one arround 8 lbs on anchovy at 100 feet, , we moved to six mile , hit a Chromer feeder 12 lbs , at 100 feet again , also a nice Hali off the bottom on a Army Truck. We moved to 7 mile , reports and dock talk , indicated that it was great the day before for Hali. Made a couple of passes , alot of boats ,huge Sealions moved in , so we picked up and went to the big bank , south Rat's Nose , we hit 2 more perfect feeders at 100 - 200 feet , one on a truck and another on puple haze head , anchovy , and another nice Hali ,also on a truck off the bottom. Could not believe , there was only one other boat out there with us.Listening to some of the reports on this forum , the other boats must have either got there limits, or left early due to really sore arms ,I must have JUST missed it !!! We did get out to the big bank at arround 2:00 in the afternoon though, to be fair , fished an hour or so , the fog bank slowly rolled in , packed up and came in after just over an hour out there. Crabbing was also good ,All and all , we did have a great trip , I worked and slept most of it , met some great new friends at Poett Nook, Weather was perfect, Can't wait to go again in a couple of weeks , to finish the year ( if the wife let's me !! haha )Note of interest , Pill Point did real well for Coho Sunday morning !! thanks Jim !! Cheers....
