Bamfield/Barkey winter reports 09/10

If you did ten (10) trips and caught only one fish it's time to hire a guide to come aboard your boat and show you the ropes, a person can read and read and read until they're black in the face but that's not fishing.

There are a few guides that post on this board who are very reasonable, put up a post asking them to contact you.

Maybe just hire a guide to work in your boat? Maybe he will cut you a good price just for his labour and advice? Would have to be in the off season, where he isn't to busy! Anyways, money well spent one way or the other............BB

Newfieslayer, I once fished with a Bamfield resident in the Barkley Sound area on his boat. I realized it's not easy to find a decent salmon or halibut in the whole sound that covers many miles. Bamfield resident had to move around in each spots to find the fish. Fortunately, I have managed to catch a few nice springs plus large bucketmouth lingcod by jiggin' and trollin' methods.

I hear you NewfieSlayer.
I have been fishing the Bamfield barkley area a few times a year for quite some time. I do ok when the fishing is really good but I have never seemed to learn the little things that would make me more consistent.I have considered the idea of hiring a guide to come on my boat and teach me, but have wondered if that was even a possibility? Anyone who might be interested(maybe for a halli lesson this time of year or near future whatever is best)email me and we can talk about it. I live in comox and get out there a couple times a year in July Aug.I run a 19 foot bayliner cuddy, set up for fishing, kicker, hand held gps ,sounder riggers ect.Just to clarify< I am looking for a guide to teach me in the bamfield barkley area not comox. Also whanted to say I work full time and fish for fun with my daughter and my friends, Not looking to ever become a guide myself.

cheers: Ray

No place I would rather be (FISH ON)

I do ride alongs as long as the boat is safe.

Usually the guys are pretty happy with the investment...

Fish all over right now too guys. Went out this morning for a couple hours retained a couple springs and a sweet 30 hali off Bradys Beach. Gonna fire up some pics after lunch.

Newfieslayer - jigging works, but you really gotta know the holding spots to be effective. The guys Felix is talking about have been fishing that way out here for years. That said, if you can learn the spots and which are on when - not only do you catch fish, but god it's fun.

Couple good holding spots on this side of the sound depending on the time of year...

I personally wouldn't even start jigging for them until June.

Link for Barkley from the site http://salmonuniversity.com/vis_barkley_sound.html

With the help from SFBC members tips and posts (Thanks everyone) along with the above link, I did manage to get 3 Tyee's over 35LB last year
