Bamfield/Barkey winter reports 09/10

Hey careful not to get too close to him, I hear he's working on boat side IED's :D They are disguised to look like any normal can of lucky beer, but when opened there can be explosive results.

Great weather on the west coast right now. So much so that a few of us decided to hop in the boat on Tuesday and fish our way to Ucy for a night of hottubbing and pubbing! Great to visit the big city.

Started at Meares for a few passes, nothing happening. Headed into the broken group to cruise around and have a bite to eat. Concensus was to give up on fish and get to the bar. Cruised accross Louden and noticed a couple guys fishing at Chrow.

Better give it a rub I suggest.

Lower the gear and fish on! Jodi was first up as she hasn't caught a salmon since August. She pulls in a 10lbr. Gaff and bonk. Turn the boat, reset and BANG.

Wendy's turn this time and she's got no problems with the 8lb spring on her spoon. We decide to let this guy swim another day. Reset and hook another instantly. I'm up and 12lbs of silver meets the gaff.

Only Sheldon left, but the bite is done. Try for another half hour for none.

3 for three in 40 mins had us pretty happy anyhow.

Spent the night at Reef Point Cottages, soaked away the chill from a day on the water and had a few bevvys.

Up Wednesday, quick grocery shop at the big Co-op and then a straight shot home. Into the harbour by noon.

Might go today for a bit when I go visit the traps, if not, definitely tomorrow and Boxing Day for the mini-derby.

Have a good xmas everyone.

Jeff

Back from a quick christmas fish.

Three in, one kept, about 7lbs, others smaller.

Ken was out there schooling me - hooked over 10 I believe!

Weather couldn't be nicer, hope xmas day is as good for the rest of you!!!

See you in the morning Degree of Freedom!

Yep, our 9lber just didn't cut the mustard!

What a great day on the water. We were hooked up well over a dozen times, of course losing the best fish right at the end... Should nurse the sunburn, but it looks pretty sweet out there for today as well. Hmmmm. What to do.

Great mini-derby Ken, the after snacks were delicious and much appreciated after such a hard day on the water:) We're in again next year for sure.

Finally a couple of calm days!

Went for a quick troll yesterday for a 14lbr before deciding to go exploring. We are planning to fish a couple of the REALLY remote boat in only streams in the sound for steelhead in a little bit so figured we should do some recon. (NO NAMES)

As we were cruising throught the Broken Group, Sheldon spotted some orange showing up high in the bushes behind a beach on one of the little islands. I nudged up to a ledge and he climed off to search out the treasure. We ended up with one of those enourmous oblong scotchmen that the commercial prawners use, perfect for my hali system!

Well we were so thrilled with that find that we spent the next couple hours just putting him on islands to explore while I dropped the anchor and watched. It was great fun. Gathered up all kinds of different size and shaped floats, one little plastic net float covered in Japanese writing, but no glass balls of course.

Fog Ducker was running behind so wasn't on the water till today I believe. I'm heading out in a couple of hours - not sure if I'm fishing or exploring, see what comes of it.

Crustaceons have been beyond cooperative!

Managed to drag a couple of local yokels out yesterday for the afternoon.

Couldn't beat the weather, no wind or rain whatsoever.

Double header about 25 minutes in yielded an 8 and a 14!

Thought we were into it but then... NADA for the next couple hours. Well nothing but some color and a buzz! Five - Oh came rollin' into the harbour in there new rig - wouldn't want to have to try and outrun that *******!

Looks like a great clamming tide this afternoon in the sunshine so a little bivalve hunt is in order.

Hope some of you are enjoying this weather break as much as I am.
