Another anchoring thread

So what is the general consensus on too much speed of drift to throw the hook? I've heard 1.5 knots and 2knots...obviously depth matters as well as more rode can handle higher currents, but lets say it's 200ft deep with 600ft of line and chain.

Well for speaking down (vic)here it varies where you are SO you REALLY need to know the water and read it here is an example of what not to do!!!! I was out for salmon on saturday bucking the ebb at constance saw this guy come out and try and anchor on the edge when you first hit constnce call it the NNE edge where it comes from 350 ft to 90 in the span of 200 yds. he threw the hook out his boat was side ways when it hooked that boat spun so hard almost tossed the guys out of it!!!!! luckily the anchor let go at that time it was doing about 1.8 kts not very ideal and was going to get even stronger.
Just because its a day of or (weekend) off it doesnt mean you can fish unless you go hide behind somewhere tucked inbehind where current cant get you.

Me personally 1.2 is about max but depends on how long it gets to get to 1.2 if its a short tide where it only lasts 4 hours the "force" behind it seems stronger I know you are thnking 1.2 isnt fast and I agree but its the push of force of that mass of water that gets people into trouble go fish race rocks 1 or 2 times you will see what i mean, just be carefull this weekend tides are ideal for hali.

Well, this summer I added anchoring for halibut to my arsenal. Worked great. Halibut up to 42lbs and some other great tasting bottom dwellers. One thing to note while anchored is to pull the bow to stern line up to the side cleat and tie it off to prevent the boat from becoming broadside to the current and or swells.

Just bought my first anchor system, and gonna try to get a couple Mon., Tues.,Wed. next week. Have done plenty of it
with a good buddy of mine,so know the proper technique, safety etc. I purchaced an 11 lb. Bruce, and would like to
know what size zap-strap to put on the end. I have a 16.5 Double Eagle with a 115 Johnson,so I don't want to go too
big so as I won't be able to break it if it gets stuck. Thanks for any advice you can give me! FF

Two large zap straps.

You may want to try one large strap first if the current is under 1.2 or so as often that is enough. If it isn't you can always add more and reset. Nothing more scary for a newbie than not being able to break off right away.

I use 1 large one. Got hung up the other day pulled from 3 angles finaly it came free. Zap strap broke it worked perfectly. I have a 17ft boat with a 60hp so you don't need to worry about not having enough power to break the straps. Start small and go bigger or more straps if they are breaking during normal use. I am guessing 1 will be all you need.

Thanks everyone for the replies. By one large one I asume you mean the ones that are 3/8s to 1/2in. width. Is that
right??
