Just asking what most prefer....A single treble or a treble with a trailer???Or ???
I have used both and haven't seen a definate best one for me . They both seem to hook and land fish..

I've used single up through gill plate sticking out nose..and treble trailer through lateral dorsal for anchovie and seems to work fine. Anyone do it different I too would like to know.

I used to use a no 2 3x strong treble plus a single -but I found the single usually got broken off or damaged when netting a large spring. Same thing when I used two singles. So I have switched entirely to a single treble and am happy. Be warned though that the treble does not hook a coho and stick the way it does with a Spring. I believe it is something to do with the way a coho takes the bait.

I'm sorry I read your post incorrectly. You meant using anchovie holder and I thought you meant anchovy by it's self. When using a holder I use a treble with a single trailer an inch or so following tail.

I use a treble with a single stinger hook.

I've seen too many strikes with just one treble hook that just do not hook up. You really need that trailing hook.

Yes, they will break off during netting. As long as you get the fish in the net and in the boat, what is a bit of line? I just toss the hooks and line at this point and put on a fresh leader, but if you want, you can re-tie the hooks on fresh line.

If you are doing things right, you will go through several hook-ups per day. If you are not burning up anchovy leaders, you are not catching fish.

Tie them with 40# Maxima or Berkley Big Game line and you are good to go.

if a fish gets hooked on the trailing hook I don't like the way a treble gets embedded in the gill plate, can't rightfully release the fish if this happens.Especially if it's undersize and the back edge of the gill plate is all torn up.....NFG
2 singles work fine #1 or #2 with a 3/0 or 4/0 trailer.

I too use a treble and a single trailer. I've had too fish not hook up with the one treble set-up. Almost all of my fish seem to hook up on the single trailer. I've never had my trailer hooks break off.

I just started using a trailer for the first time this year. I too was getting tired of hauling in half an anchovie with the treble setting just infront of the bite. This last trip I'd estimate that at least half of the fish successfully hooked and landed were caught on the trailer. I didn't have any problems with line breakage although I did change/re-tie after each fish.

Hell... why not 3 or 4 hooks. LOL!

I find it odd that we have to use barbless hooks to protect the fish we release yet we are allowed to use multiple hooks? A single trailer is not too bad I guess but I see some guys with tandem trebles. That's gotta cause some damage.
1 hook seems to work for me.
Just my 2 cents.

It may be the picture,or my terrible eye sight, but the single rear hook seems to be attached by something other than "line". If I'm wrong and it's my eyes, sorry in advance, but it looks thicker.lol

It's probably just a heavier test, and it's just snelled onto the shank. Maybe it's time for an eye exam.;)

Richard...that poor chovy looks like a Ethiopian aids victom!
LMAOF.. GOOD ONE:D:D:D

Myself I use 2 single Gami hooks, RED anodized.
I have experienced the broken leader and hooks in the net as well. But they usually make it to the net before letting loose.
Just my personal experience but I do not like Treble's.
Always seem to give me grief if I am releasing the fish.
But that is just me!!

The reason the line is breaking between the hooks is because one is getting hooked in the net while the fish is still thrashing around. Unless you are using really light leaders, then there should be no problem with them while playing the fish.

Yes, occasionally the line will break and the fish will get away, but the stinger hook will get you more fish into the net in the long run.

Check the line between the hooks before you put it in the water. If there is a nick in it, then replace it with a fresh one.

One way for it to break is when playing a fish, the line runs through the hooks in the treble and gets pinched. I try and set it so this won't happen, but that is easier said than done.

Also, use at least 40# test line for your leaders.

I use 2 singles down in Puget Sound with a red stinger, but have found a treble with a red stinger produces more and works better for me off the West Coast. I agree with all the above, but have also found 30# test leaders are more than enough for me... but quess I don't catch that many 80/lb springs either! :)

PS... would never use that anchovy!

Do you try and have the 2nd hook ride with point down or point up? I wonder which position has the best hook up ratio?

If the chovy is spinning correctly, should it matter?
