300 hp suzuki

I've got a 27' lifetimer and am upgrading the power. I am thinking of switching to a single w/kicker from 140 twins. I found a great deal on a suzuki 300hp single. Good idea/Bad idea?

i would call lifetimer and ask them. They are very good at what they do and I am sure they have had experience with a single vs. twins. I have the same boat with 150's on it. I personally would not like to go with any less power. I think there would be a torque related issue or at least a difference in torque going with a single. I purchased my boat second hand and the people at lifetimer still gave me time for questions about the boat and not just interested in the "new sale". Give em a call. I am sure it will be informative.

Sounds like a great idea. I think the boss has the right idea of checking with lifetimer though. Double check the shaft length as you may need a 30 inch leg . Twins generally lose 30% efficiency over singles and two motors means twice the maintenance costs. Lots of guys like twins because of the ability to get home safely on a bad day if one motor gives up , a lot to be said for that.

where you use the boat is important too if your fishing offshore renny bamfield ect a kicker might not be the wises choice but say you fish off sooke naniamo then a single is the better choice in my opinion ( maintenance costs). also don't forget about the cost to remove all the components of the twins and fill the holes properly in the dash and transom. the 300 uses electric shift controls and digital gauges that use an under dash mounted BCM (control computer) NEMA back bone and different modules to make all the bell and whistles work ...... all adding up in the install costs especially if these items aren't included.

The torque makes sense and is a very good point. I wil contact lifetimer, they are good at answering any questions I have asked. I might be hooped with the shaft length. The dealer is asking 14K OBO for an '08 with 250hrs. The 140's are adequate and run like a top, I just want to beef it up a bit.

They (140 Suzzies) are great motors (I ran one on my last boat) but they are over rated for hp and are really running about 127hp so an upgrade to a 300 anything should give you a big boost in power.
