23? 24? Foot Tolman Skiff Build - Nanaimo

It was @cracked_ribs I believe his instagram handle was or is double eagle island. He doesn't appear to be a member of the site anymore.

More weekend progress. Front portside panels dry fit. I'm applying the glass/epoxy to the inside of the panels on a horizontal surface because its way easier. Portside should be fully attached at some point tomorrow night.

Have been messing with the temp laser, can measure 1-3 degree exotherm on the epoxy while curing. I am experimenting with cranking the heat to 27-28c to see if I can measure when curing is mostly complete by the exotherm ending instead of waiting 24 hours. At 27 degrees it turns super hard in around 18 hours, but still isn't effectively sandable until 48 hours

Mad gains on the build last night. Had the big crew come and help fillet, and tape the chines, bow, sides and transom then set all the glass in epoxy over the entire hull in a single session. About 300 square feet of glass + 120 feet of tape over all the joints.

Just finished first flood coat, one more this evening. Then fairing time.

In case you don't know, this is a HUGE time saver when fairing. I make my own cutting ~1/8" tall triangular notches into the plastic bondo spreaders. You can leave an 1/8" gap between the notches. That way you get fairly spread out ridges that sand really fast.

After about a year off of the build, I have been hard at it the last few weeks. This weekend I flipped the hull over on to a trailer to start construction of the cuddy, pilot house, and deck. 42 strong we carried the boat out of the garage and flipped it without incident or effort.

Indescribable feeling.

Some details on the build to this point:
LOA 23'6, 8'3" beam at midships and 7' 10" at transom.
Approx weight of about 1200# minus fall off
23 or so gallons of epoxy
375 man-hours to this point over the last couple years

Onward! Hoping for June 2026 launch if my budget can keep up with the project.

Love it! Cold weather never kept Alaskans or Canadians down. Thanks for the update

Did you finish your project. I am moving to van island with the intention of building a 24 jumbo. Basically went down the exact same path you did in my thinking..I fish out of an 18 ft klamath aluminum skiff now. Any advise on the Tolman would be welcome..thanks Jim
Love my 19ft Klamath, hard to beat the layout / fishability.

Looks great, I've got the tolman skiff book on my shelf. Wish I had the time to take a project like this on.
