2026 Victoria and Oak Bay Reports

Was approx 14 lbs . 32x18x18 divided by 750 = 13.84. I’m not sure how accurate that method is but that’s what I’ve been using. Of course when I tell the story it gonna be a twenty pounder ;-)
Might be a math problem as 95 cm is 37.4 inches and mabe the girth was converted wrong? 95 m/2.54= 37.4 inches

That’s correct conversion from centimetres to inches.

If the girth factor was off the same amount as the length factor then with some quick math it would be: 37.5” x 21” x 21” = ~22#

My fish tub is 36 so the 32 in is likely correct as it was short, but it must’ve Been near 85 cm not 95. I need to get a quality scale on the boat this yr. I’ve seen how you can get roasted by over weighting a fish on a forum so I error on the light side hehe

After days of winds we got out onto the water today. At the Esquimalt launching ramp the news was that there were fish out at Constance. We got to the bank around 9:15, and counted 7 boats. I like to fish the edges of the bank and we did get a few bites but they were little more than shakers. Around 11:00 we got keeper #1 and then around Noon a much better result. The lure today was a white UV hoochie 24" behind the Madi flasher. Tried: herring, herring aid spoon, Mint Tulip hoochie, but it was the white hoochie that did the job. Fished in 100 to 150' of water and from on the bottom to 20 ft up. Currents were here and there, the tide table showed a long long ebb.

Lots of boats heading out to Constance this morning. A little to rough for me, so I stayed close. Fished Ross Bay, the Oak Bay Flats and the Gap. Got fish at all. Some nice fish in the mid teens, ALL clipped. 5" Tomic near the bottom got most. Large herring in stomach contents.

Salmon fishing Great!
Crabbing sucked.

Most boats got a few salmon fishing Oak Bay and outwards but we had to work for them. Mostly sub 10lbs this weekend. We also picked up a 97cm hali and several small lings kept us busy. Plugs out fished spoons. Surprised how few boats out on such a beautiful day.

Fished Thurs and Friday with kaelc on a friends boat.
Thurs first fish was around 130cm let it go, then got a 36 in Ling let it go and then a big octopus. The octopus had grabbed a rat fish that had hooked into our bait. Brought it up to the boat and after a couple of minutes it let go. 00 fish on Thurs but got 6 crab.

Friday got 2 fish at 930am 107cm and 109cm. Then the RCMP and US Coast Guard showed up and boarded us. Check our gear and driver and fishing licenses and jumped off the boat and off they went to the next guys. Fished until 130 and were getting ready to pull the gear and go and got our third fish 109cm.
Pulled the crab traps and got 5 keepers.

Excellent day all round,

Great time, thanks so much Doug, always great to get out with you. Funnest parts were, the 50lb (estimated) hali was caught on a salmon jig, single barbless hook and a light spinning rod. Our former Albertan friend had the thrill of his life reeling it in, half of the thrill sending photos of his fish back to his buddies back in gods country. I may have hooked into two giant pacific octopus, both times I couldn't get gear off the bottom for the life of me, and then suddenly it was like I had a hundred pound hali. Both Salmon and Herring under skirts for the win. I have never caught a hali on octopus and if the boat wasn't so shinny and new, and if anyone had a killer instinct on board we would have boated the octo. My freedive friends bite them between the eyes to kill them, ballsy. Afraid to open my work email now but it was worth playing hooky for two days.
