Looking at a first time trip up to winter this spring/summer. Just thought I’d test the waters here, I want to bring my kid and wife who does not handle big water well. I get it, it’s big water there… my question is if it does blow up are there decent spots to tuck away to still fish or not worth the trip with them? I’d love to get them into a halibut but options are limited.

Not really. A westerly you can fish the lighthouse at Kains. Southeast you’re pretty exposed. You can run to the sound more, can fish Cliffe on a SE but it’ll be sloppy and still not too protected.

What kind of boat you have? How long you going for? Was there last June in a 18.5 Explorer for 4 days. 3 days it was nice, one day was windy. Found we could always fish for salmon. On the decent days we had no problem going to grassy point for halibut.

have an ocean pro 240. No solid plans yet just weighing options for end of July timing. Spent a lot of time around there as a kid and would love to go back but I live South Island and typically head out uke way nowadays. I’d probably plan for 4 fishing days but I have the luck that it’ll blow the whole time and if I have the family it will be somewhat fairwaether offshore fishing.
