2025 Victoria and Oak Bay Reports

Not a good luck day. Found a little bait but no takers.

Fished from 9-1:30 out front of Pedder with a pile of boats around. 270 feet of water and Lots of dog fish, not one Hali. Tried salmon belly and herring still nothing 😪I officially suck at Hali fish
Man that’s tough. Try a 5-8lb salmon head with a circle hook through the nose and jaw. We didn’t have any on it today, but just left it down on the front rod with a 2lb weight and fished 1.5 on the stern rods in 240. Dog fish hit it and chum up the water but can’t fit it in their mouths. Eventually a Hali will swallow it. Having a 3rd rod in the water ups the odds. I had lots of skunks the last few years too.

I appreciate it, I will definitely give that a try, thank you!!

Went out for hali this morning as well - no love on an 830 to noon shift in a productive (in the past) place - though i drifted into the deep on the switch... tied my AP spoon of the month on the pick (4" white-glow sandlance) and burned over to oak bay flats to troll back and picked up a nice 65+cm hatch. Two crabs in two traps and an orca show made up for the lack of flatfish.

Slow trolling off the waterfront this morning so I headed out to the bank. Trolling out there wasn't doing anything for me so I changed to jigging while also letting some meat bounce bottom. Did get one good sized halibut up to the boat but it turned the hook out as I was reaching with the net. Jigging was great, several springs, mostly smaller but a couple of 10'ish. Unfortunately the bigger fish did the same as the halibut. All on a 4" white Dart.

Fun! I figured there would be too much current to drift and not get caught up.

Did get caught a couple of times but got lucky. One advantage of a little boat is you can react pretty fast, circle around to free the snag. Drift was pretty fast but a 1 1/2 lead stayed vertical. Kept the ball one crank off the bottom and watched the sounder.

Nice morning yesterday. Rain mostly held off. 2 hours on the hook. Lots of action. 4 dogs, 1 skate, 3 halibut. Had to release 1 halibut, only 2 of us on board. First halibut was a double header halibut 1 line, skate on the other. 2nd halibut was a triple header (or quad depending on how you look at it) Halibut on both side rods and 2 dogs on the same line out the back while bringing in the halibuts.
91cm and 102cm on the nose. The one released was smaller.

Pandemonium!

It seems odd that every time fisheries reduces our halibut size limit,we catch smaller fish ,very few overs. Where have all the big halibut gone.Back when I started targeting butts ,we would regularly get 70 lb.plus and usually at least one per season over 100 lbs.. In 2 trips so far I've had 6 on and only one that might have been over, but I managed to break it off before seeing it.It was a PITA trying to release even the smaller ones.you could easily end up with a hook in hand as it thrashes beside the boat.

Here is a video from 26 March. I thought I only had one strike. Even the herring came for a look.
Loads of Jellyfish and eleven?? salmon came to look. Eight ounces of weight and spoons.

Is then sound your boat? Also, they seem quite curious about the weight.
The sound came from a large gang troll I was trying that day. I thought flashers may not work well with the camera.
If you watch closely at the start of the video you will notice a large tail in the bottom left corner.
Of all the U/W videos this was the only one with noise and that much attention.
