2025 Victoria and Oak Bay Reports

Seems pretty quiet out off Victoria. I was out a couple times over the last few weeks and had back to back skunks.
I got out for an aft on Friday and managed to find a few in the 3 hr float. I keeper 62cm and 3 other hits with smaller ones released. Wind and waves kicked up and shortened our day but it is always worth getting out.

Sunday was good from Macauley to Brotchie. Four for myself between 6-10lbs, all released, most on 6" herring. Both boats I talked to had fish on board and had multiple hook ups. One said an 18, whether that was inches or pounds I don't know.
Tried over by Clover but only had one hit.

Monday: Out twice as long, same time and place and only lost two. Probably because I had a blank license in the boat. Was nice out there and there are certainly worse things to do on a Monday.

Slow off the Victoria waterfront this morning.

Started off pretty early wanting to catch some of the dawn tide change. In the first hour at Brotchie a flurry of action, had two to thr boat 6-8lbs and two misses. Another boat got one. The debris line drifted in and the fishing died. Tried over at Clover. Nothing. Back to the harbour mouth and trolled over towards Colwood. The only place I saw any amount of bait was at the 100ft contour towards the ship anchorage's.

Out this morning for a few hours. Dropped the traps out by esquimalt then trolled around looking for bait / fish. One pin popper that didnt stick, and other than that it was dead quiet. No crabs in the honey hole... However, the sun made it much nicer than doing taxes!

How deep where the traps? I was thinking of dropping some traps below a hundred after dismal results for the last little while at 40-80 feet.

I was in 40-60 ft, only smalls. Did get a good set a few weeks back in the same area though.

Saw lots of boats out Friday and was hoping for a report.

Out today with someone who needed a fishing trip. Started over by the ships anchored off Colwood. Lots of bait on the bottom. Several fish to the boat but nothing over 6lbs. Since it was calm went out to Constance for the tide change. Only got two out there, keeping one about 7lbs. Gave Brotchie a rub on the way back but nothing. From what I saw Colwood was the place to be, but maybe I'll try Oak bay tomorrow. All but one of eight or so fish were legal clipped. No Bananas SG spoon clobbered bait.

Followed advice above and dropped my trap out deeper. and did get a couple of good dungies. :)

DFO were at the wharf. They were busy handing out tickets and confiscating unclipped fish. Fortunately they did get a few for not marking their licenses.

Good to hear DFO is doing their thing. 2 hr in the Gap this morning and not a hit. Oak bay has been dead for the past week.

I circled over a school off Saxe point Friday morning to no avail. Only one school of bait. Hoping for better luck tomorrow.

Fog drove me in.

New toy showed how close I came.

Oak Bay seemed pretty dead Sunday P.M.. An hour on the flats and the same at the gap. Tide was running pretty hard though.

Lots of wood floating around out there. Watch out for those exposed rods sticking up along the Cattle pt. launch loading ramp. They will certainly do a nasty if you drift over them.

Rain was pattering on the roof this morning but I got up anyway. First out of Flemming. Wish I had been earlier. Over by the freighters was pretty good for the first two hours and then it tapered off from there. Wish I'd had a partner. Most fish to the boat were 3 - 7 lbs. Only saw one adipose out of ~ dozen. Lost one that may have been better. No Banana's bouncing the bottom 100 - 120'.

Crab traps were loaded. Some whoppers but they were soft. Still managed to sort out 4 keepers.
