2025 Ucluelet Fishing Reports

Made the trip out to Ukee for the first time this year with the boat. Fished Saturday and Sunday morning. Fishing was decent for us. We mooched live squid and also trolled. Flo Bay was slower than we had hoped, but we did better at little beach. We got springs with an average of 12-16 lbs with two hatchery marked springs over 20lbs. Also got a nice 23lbs lingcod while mooching squid which was a fun surprise.

Ghost flash flies were most effective for us. IMG_4728.jpeg

Water clarity hasn't been the greatest last few days. Maybe algae bloom going on. Report from buddies that Flow has been OK for the early morning bite. I got a couple out front between Little Beach and Black Rock a couple hrs after high tide this afternoon.

Really nice bite at Beg today. Initially concerned about the wind prediction, but they were wrong. Flat water with just a slight breeze for the 5 hours we fished. 4 for 10 with a couple in the high teens to 20. A nice Ling on the hootchie in addition too. Rainbow backed glow hootchie at 76 and Westcoast little Phat-e Herring Aid with glow back at 67. Long leaders. Our convert ratio was what it was possibly because we are trying to teach our grandson to run the back of the boat. He did great and had fun. Another 4 days to hone his skills. Even though at least half came on the hootchie, no squid in the guts, just 2" or smaller bait. Back at it tomorrow. jc Tuna Maru

Is the algae bloom still bad

Yup, at least it was two days ago. Spoke to a geoduck diver and said it was so bad he could not read his computer on his wrist at 30 ft. Started to clear below 35 ft.

Yes, algae has been an issue all week, along with missed, under predicted wind reports, south wind (yuk!), 7 ft 7 sec waves outside, foggggggg, cold, warm water, and areas that we always find fish that are barren. Strangest week we've had in years. Three days we started at Beg, went to Chown, Great Bear, Sail, Cree, Mears Bluff, then Swale Rock and see 1/2 dozen marks combined and everyone complaining how slow things were, and get skunked. Today was a pleasant surprise. We are greated with a brisk south wind and chop in your face, really foggy, and down right cold. We thought the worst. Decided not to run anywhere and started at Beg for a very nice Spring and one lost in the first hour. Marked fish for the next two hours, with nothing, so moved to Food. Over the low slack 2 hours, 2 Coho and another nice Spring, all on one rod at 67 with a Westcoast little Phat-e Herring Aid glow. That rod had all the bites today. Our friends also had a Spring and 2 Coho and lost a couple more at Food during that same 2 hours at 60 with a white hootchie. Lots of fish there.
As to the algae, a friend that lives here said that they have found it to be about 43' thick or so, so they start at 47' on the downriggers early morning then drop down. It's still being really persistent with patches of brown algae mixed in. Some areas so bright green it almost glows. If you don't bang the fish on the head, they don't bite.
Home tomorrow. Always next year. I love Ukee. Even when it's tough, it's my happy place. jc

We kept seeing clearing in Ukee Harbour, but it didn't last long. Yesterday between Chown and Food, we also saw patches of brown algae too. I think as long as the water stays as warm as it is (17.5 to 17.8), I don't think it's going anywhere.
It's interesting that 3 different days we did 30 mile laps from Beg to Chown to Great Bear to Sail to Cree to Mears Bluff to Swale Rock and back, all of our fish for our entire week came from Beg to Food.
If it's still there, I would suggest the 100 foot contour line at Beg and the 90 to 100 contour line at Food with a 011R hootchie and WestCoast little Phat-e glow (painted back) in Herring Aid or Irish Cream from 60 to 75. Flashers didn't matter as long as it was on a UV purple glow base. Leaders chin to floor will put you on fish. At least it did for us. jc Tuna Maru

Fished Tuesday to Friday in Ucluelet. Time spent at the Lighthouse, Little Beach, Chrow, Alley, Great Bear and Mara. Not like last year. Others that travelled further did better. One coho at Chrow and two 70s springs at Lighthouse area. Springs in about 160 feet, DR at 70 and 100 feet, green splatterback and white hootchie. Had a good wildlife encounter at the launch yesterday. Deer when launching and a bear when retrieving.

Fished Monday to Thursday out of Ucluelet, and found it much different than our previous 5 years. Fishing was slower and we didn't catch anything over 15lbs.
We ended up keeping 11 feeders between 7-10lbs, a 12 and a 15, and several black Rockfish.
Fished Mara, Flo, Great Bear, Alley Rock and the Red can. Mara was the best in the early morning or afternoon tide change. Skinny G Spoons out fished hoochies, 90ft depth out fished shallower depths.
Can't wait till next year!
Not looking forward to August combat fishing in Sooke :(
