Well this is gonna be a kinda of lil rant here it is now almost 3:30 on the 31 and we were promised a hatchery fish opening for april 1st (sfab meeting) what a joke they already said and know but no notice.
NOW if what I saw attended a SFAB meeting maybe we might get somewhere . I left sooke today (11 am) to run to pedder for the halibut season there was about 25 boats off bluffs, otter, posession. then id say 12 at trap to beechy to fraser island, come around the horn at whirl 14 boats hit pedder another 12 and could see some down at albert head
So id say a good honest 60 plus boats out fishing... DO YOU think salmon fishing is important to the south island??? and there definaltly was some fish at cleaning station...
I jigged at Whirl for a couple of hours at mid day and was surprised to see the number of boats there.

I was at Whirl as well. Started at Pedder and got 4 undersized to the boat before heading to Whirl. Started out in 130-150ft of water with no hits. On a turn I swung out to 220 to 230ft with 205 and 170 on the DR’s. Doubled up with 2 about 4lbs to the boat. Made the same tack and doubled again with a 4lb and a 6lb. Kept the 6lb and headed back. Dropped the lines to 170 and 205 for ***** and giggles and another double. Called it quits early as I only had the one spot on the card. No grandkids or fishing buddies today but a fun day anyways.

So same as last year then. What I don't get is if i'm only allowed 10 springs per year what difference does it make if I catch them in April or February?

I would want to say: because there might be different runs between those months but I don't think DFO follows any logic. So your question is reasonable.

That is their rationale as far as I can tell. Harvest the stronger runs

As always, the information contained in fisheries notices is important but the comments as to the rationale behind these decisions needs to take place in a different thread in the Conservation section. The reports threads are for fishing reports and should not be cluttered with other discussion.

Launched from Esq, dropped traps and headed to Pedder. Some strong currents at the top of the wall but we got a hit and a nice clipped gal was in the tub. As we poked out towards Race Passage the tangles insued. We could see a fleet over in Whirl so we scooted over. Was pretty slow but we got a bite and landed a 60cm . We seen one other person fight a fish but I think it spit the hook at the boat. Currents were picking up so we trolled with it back to
Pedder where we got our 3rd hit and that was another clipped one so into the tub. A full day with only 3 hits and a smooth ride home was welcomed. Had 5 keepers in the 2 traps, some big softies and a bunch of females went back.
A great day with one of my good pals as we finished up our year with a few spots still empty on our licenses.
