2025 Sidney Reports

Fished Fairfax again this afternoon. There was an absolutely unreal amount of bait, and big bait too making the lines shake when you trolled through a bait ball, large herring if I had to guess.

Hooked 4 legal fish, and took home this beauty 14lber. His stomach was empty so I couldn't confirm what they were feeding on.1000012792.jpg

Nice work. There was tons of bait in poets Cove last weekend, combined with shrimp at night. Ocean feels healthy right now.

We found the same massive clouds of bait in the inlet earlier in the week. Floor to ceiling in 70-80' at times. The vast majority of it seemed like small 3" herring - that's what the birds were attacking, anyway. The big news for us is that we managed to jig up some squid. Not a ton, but I brought home 7-8 for dinner with the gf. That might've been what your lines were hitting if you were dredging the bottom. They were anywhere from 70-150'. I'm sure there were some big herring about, too, but we didn't run into any.

Oh, we didn't touch a single salmon and only marked a few all day, but we were jigging from our kayaks and got distracted by the squid.

Where about's in the Inlet did you find the squid? I caught one last year in Deep Cove, tried a few times but never found them.
We use to catch them in Tod Inlet in December years ago but no chance now with all the boats anchored in there now.

Some were in Deep Cove, others just north of Wain. They followed the general down-tide-side-of-structure rules, to some degree. Even when we found 'em, we only managed one or two from a school. Not sure why. We thought it might've been a few squid feeding on herring instead of an actual school of squid. Hard to know, really.

Fished Wain Rock. Lots of bait but no action. Moved towards Satellite Channel and got 2 undersized winters with beautiful colours on hearing aid at 100ft. The white hootchie got a couple rock fish.
