2025 Nanaimo Reports

Hit Thrasher yesterday - a lot of action but all were short (~60cm +/-). maybe could have kept a few but we kept releasing hoping for the bigger one.
ya, we fished trasher yesterday morning as well and couldn't find a keeper. Moved to entrance for a couple hours after lunch and got 2 legals but certainly not on fire over there either. Prawning off thrasher sucked for us but I've never really prawned south of trasher so was a bit of a shot in the dark. A couple fish in winter is always acceptable though so never gonna complain about that. Had a couple kids on board as well so family day was a success... ipad streaming canada/fin hockey game didn't suck either. :)

Tough area to nail your spots with all the current. Also lots of movement in the traps which can affect your results. Traps can even land on their sides or upside down if you're not using the current correctly. I have a few honey holes that will result in 5 or 10 prawns if you miss the spot by less than 100 feet. Vs. over 100 per trap when you nail it. That's prawning.

thanks Rain City. Could you please post a screenshot of your Navionics showing your honey hole near Thrasher? Make sure you've got SonarChart on so that I get extra detailed contour lines and then draw your hole line in GREEN (for GO) and then show your spots 100 feet away in RED (for no go) so that I make sure to stay away. Thanks in advance and promise I won't tell anyone else ;)

I warned you lol

Finally got out in 2025 and hit the ditch at Entrance. The two of us got our four springs and lost many more.
Not one shaker and the smallest under was 55cm. They’re out there folks. One of the few double headers resulted in a 63 and 78

One a side note; I’m going back to the tandem hook setup on hoochies and Flashflies after losing so many large fish after seemingly solid hook-ups with the swivel and large J-hook rig. The same thing happened to me on one bad day last season as well.

I don't seem to have a problem with the single big river bait hooks. Ditch the J-hooks. Or just stop losing them! Lol

Those big river bait hooks are like the ones that come tandem on the Flashflies. I followed forum advice (along with some guided experiences) to start tying my hoochies with a swivel and a #4 J-hook with limited success. Last year when I lost 6 in a row before switching to a tandem rig at least some of them were small coho. Today I lost at least five really heavy fish and my BiL fishing with me lost at least three.
I can’t call it a bad day when I boat my limit but I think it could have weighed more and been over sooner. Lol

Yeah that hurts

Hi there everyone I am wondering how deep are you fishing at entrance island because I would be using a manual downrigger and has anyone fished Gallos point or when you get out of departure bay and you go left how has the salmon fishing been in those areas and what spoons or Hoochie or plugs would you recommend any help would be greatly appreciated

In the winter I fish right on the bottom for the most part. You quite literally bounce your cannon ball of the bottom when you let it down. Spoons and plugs for me but I think you will find a huge range of gear out there. We found a pretty good sized squid in the belly of one of the fish we cut open.
