It started hot, had a lull like everywhere on the west side. It’s back on, fish everywhere.

I will be up for the Canada day weekend. Big swing tides going to restrict the jiggy time for halibut, Will report later next week.

I’ve spent 30 yrs trying to figure the tides out in 125/126. On paper a 10’+ tide should have 2# of lead at a 45’ sitting on anchor, and vice versa. I’ve been on the 50 fathom hanging in a 5’ swing and can’t keep the gear on the bottom. Depends on the spot, and depth obviously. But my best days have been hanging on the pick during big tides, through a change is best I’m sure anyone would agree. Good luck!

we were blown off the water at spring a while back so we tucked inside the rocks and had non stop action. lots of lings and cod. i think the silver fish you will need to be outside the rocks on the usual tack. jigging for salmon out of a kayak would be such a blast

i'm out here right now. weather has been miserable with limited opportunities to fish given the winds and weather out of our small open boat. in about 6 hours of fishing over 2 days around rugged only had a couple of shakers. heard it's been better around spring island but we couldn't fish after motoring over there in the rain today. too rough and snotty. really hoping for better weather for our final 2 days here. would like to bring home at least a few salmon!

we got skunked entirely. ok, a couple of black rockfish and an under sized ling in total. we fished pretty hard on day 3 when the weather was great but never made it to the outer waters. it's a stunning area, just gorgeous and the outside is way above my pay grade. very intimidating in a small boat. that's for guides and boats with at least 115hp, not 16 open boats with a 50 like mine. talked with a guide from Rugged Point lodge at the dock in FH and he said it was slow inside, red hot outside. go figure. we had a great adventure, but in my rig, i'll be sticking to ECVI or Nootka in the future. you need very fair weather to fish this area unless you are highly experienced and comfortable in big open water.
he also said, small spoons like skinny g's in the usual colours. short leaders and trolling about 3mph. the guides are always varying depths and sometimes they are shallow other times near bottom.

A buddy is up there right now and is struggling to find a spring over 6lbs. Hopefully things improve!

from what i gather, talking to a number of fishermen, very good over all. 90 feet and deeper produces bigger fish and lots of small lings in the shallows, but there are exceptions. guys have caught 50 pound halibut in 30 feet of water there. also there's plenty of black rockfish (also called black bass, and that's exactly what they look like) and they are great eating. i kept one of these and we at it for dinner. not a tonne of meat on them so bring home a few. i once paddled from little Espinoza to the tip of the Brooks and back over 12 days and i think i feel more comfortable out there in a sea kayak (when i was at peak skills and fitness, a younger version of myself) than in a small powerboat.
Just came back from Esperanza, and there are lots in the 12-16lb class. 20lbers are a little trickier.

Don’t need much of a boat to clean up on bottomfish and salmon up in Kyuquot. Fished for a decade up there in a 16’ tin boat with a 28 Johnson, and a 15.5 Hourston with a 70. Rarely went offshore, only on a nice day for halibut. Caught a lot of halibut right on the surfline or inside all the islands. It has been better just outside all of the islands, but there’s been limits to catch inside all season.

Nice to hear a truthful size range be told! I must’ve whacked or shook off 200 springs before one hit the 20# mark this June lol. They sure are a lot of fun though still, this time of year they think they are big!

Feed is around - not as many squid as in the past couple of years. Lots of small 2 year old springs. Fair number of low/mid teen springs - a few high teens. 20+ took more work to find - but a new bunch moved in today. Wind / swell have made offshore Hali fishing unpleasant - not worth the run given the new size/catch limits. That said - 80-82 cm Hali’s were around in good numbers.
