2025 Comox Valley-Comox Harbour, Kitty Coleman, Cape Lazo, Denman & Hornby Islands

Was out by Norris this evening before the wind got up. Was fishing shallow (80 ft) but had good action. Lots of bites, 2 small springs and a nice coho up to the boat but the coho was wild so couldn’t keep.

I thought hake (pacific whiting?) were a deep water fish (1000+ feet). The regs don’t even mention them in zone 14. I see that there is a commercial fishery for them in SW Vancouver island. Is catching them here an oddity?

There is a resident and distinct population of hake that live in the deep water between the Island and mainland in the 1000+ ft basin. Believe they are usually 400-500', with the red squid feeding on them from below. Probably some krill brought them up and over Kitty.

Interesting! Thanks

The one I caught [many years ago] was pre-downrigger with about 4 ounces of weight and 75' of line out.

can concur. we have jigged for the squid that are are feeding on the hake. the hake look like a long cloud of little spots on my finder. not like a typical bait ball

Good morning out at South Hornby Thursday morning. Kept one Spring and released three others. Skinny G herring aid with a red Oki flasher was out-fishing the chartreuse flasher/white hootchie rod. Most the boats were out deeper from Norris, but I fished the 175 - 200' contour... mostly to stay out of traffic while fishing solo.
