There is a periodic commercial drag fishery in the area between Lazo and Texeda. French Creek Seafoods the buyerI caught one at Lazo when I was a kid 50+ years ago. I remember my grandfather helped me identify it from a book.

Fished Kitty last night. Lots of Hake....
Kept a nice 80cm spring and nice hatchery Coho. Bait everywhere
There is a resident and distinct population of hake that live in the deep water between the Island and mainland in the 1000+ ft basin. Believe they are usually 400-500', with the red squid feeding on them from below. Probably some krill brought them up and over Kitty.I thought hake (pacific whiting?) were a deep water fish (1000+ feet). The regs don’t even mention them in zone 14. I see that there is a commercial fishery for them in SW Vancouver island. Is catching them here an oddity?

Where were you fishing?Easy limits of clipped coho yesterday and many springs to the boat, the coho had tiny prawns or shrimp in their stomachs
C&BWhere were you fishing?
Spent 3hrs at C&B on Friday. Lots of boats!
Pretty consistent action at 180-220 depth… lost track of how many fish to the boat. Unfortunately, all but two were wild coho, 50-60cm. Tried shallower but only got shakers. One shaker was snacked on by something bigger.
